Mons 2015 - Jardin suspendu
Start date: May 15, 2015, End date: Sep 14, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

In 2015, Mons will be the European Capital of Culture. A unique opportunity for a small town in Belgium to become known in Europe through the preparation and implementation of many shows, exhibitions and events for all audiences. One team of the Foundation Mons 2015 focuses its activities on Youth through the theme "Mon(s) ideal" (a play on words for “My ideals”) to enable young people to be committed in concrete projects and to acquire useful skills for their future. In this context, the "Hanging Garden" consists of the reopening of a park in order to become the gathering place for young and involved people. They could meet there, express their ideas, rethink the world together and participate in committed workshops/discussions on the theme of ecology, urban ecosystem and the question of the water cycle. Therefore this project is above all a citizen, committed and participative project, with the desire to be sustainable and durable. It is also European through the artists involved in the project and the context of European Capital of Culture. The main objective is to propose a new refurbished park, to make it famous and to educate everyone on themes related to sustainable development and our current consumer society. It will be a gathering place for meetings, participative and citizen actions. In this context the garden is like a small forest where artists, gardeners, activists and walkers can meet. In order to carry out this project, we would like to invite three European volunteers to join the group with whom the Youth team will work, and to participate in various aspects of the project. This will include implementing concrete events, attending speakers during their workshops, but also ensuring a permanence in the park, participating in its daily maintenance and informing any visitor to learn more about the project. Therefore we expect that young volunteers are motivated, reliable, responsible and flexible, with affinities to the cultural and artistic fields. We expect multiple results for this project, i.e. it will become a citizen and participative project in order to be sustainable and durable, thanks to the investment of local actors; the acquisition of knowledge and skills for the volunteers, in terms of project organization and living in a community; creating links between the Foundation Mons 2015, the city of Mons and European, external organizations.
