Modèles innovants de gouvernance des ressources des zones cotières-marines pour une défense stratégique des littoraux Méditerranéens (MEDSANDCOAST)
Start date: Dec 30, 2013, End date: Dec 29, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Project in brief Storms, rise of sea level, floods, erosion of dunes, salt water intrusion: the effects of climate change are accelerating with devastating consequences for coastal areas. Sandy coastlines are even more exposed since they represent ecosystems which are very sensitive to climate change and soil occupancy such as urbanization, tourism and infrastructures. To tackle in a sustainable manner the challenges of Mediterranean costal protection, MEDSANDCOAST project will support the commitment of public authorities in favour of long term policies and plans addressing the environmental management of coastal zones in pilot sites located in France, Italy, Lebanon and Tunisia.Specific objective To produce, transfer to responsible organisations and capitalize on innovative, sustainable and optimized governance and planning tools for Mediterranean coastlines in order to address the effects of climate change Expected Results: • Reinforced planning and intervention capacity of institutions thanks to a better knowledge of phenomenon which impact coastlines • Needs of marine/coastal sand for the environmental recovery of coastal areas evaluated • Availability of sand resources increased for interventions aimed at adapting degraded coastlines to the effects of climate change • Reduced conflicts between users operating in coastal zones • Environmental impacts of human activities on marine-coastal ecosystems reduced
