"MITDENKEN.MITREDEN.MITBESTIMMEN - Strukturierter Dialog zum Thema Lebenskompetenzen"
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

What hinders young people in developing life skills? What can be done to stimulate and help young people in developing their full potential, especially marginalised young people? How can youth work and non-formal education contribute to the realisation of young people’s potential? We are looking for answers to these and many other questions in this Structured Dialogue. The Structured Dialogue brings the interests and opinions of young people to politics and is part of the EU Youth Strategy. Our project aims at bringing this dialogue, this participation opportunity, to the local level in Austria. The next dialogue cycle is already the sixth cycle and was initiated by the European Union. The thematic priority is "life skills" and the cycle is coordinated by the EU Presidency of the Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta (January 2016 to June 2017). The World Health Organisation defines life skills as ‘abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enables individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. Life skills are certain psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that allow people to make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathise with others, and cope with and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner. In our opinion, it is crucial that the societal conditions and political framework enable all young people to access or acquire those skills - and this is what we want to discuss and exchange opinions and ideas about."MITDENKEN.MITREDEN.MITBESTIMMEN - Structured Dialogue on Life Skills" will therefore collect opinions and experiences on the subject of life skills via an online consultation and through the implementation of local actions in 2016. The results will then be discussed on a European level (EU Youth Conference), but should also be made available in Austria and be discussed further. That is why we want to organize two major dialogue conferences in Austria, where young people discuss the issues in direct contact with decision-makers and can work on developing new ideas together. The dialogue conferences will take place in fall 2016. Prior to the dialogue conferences we want to work with youth workers from different fields of action (Open Youth Work, youth organisations and university context) and provide tools on how to implement Structured Dialogue for the respective target groups on a local level. At the dialogue conferences more than 100 young people and 50 representatives from politics and administration will participate, while the dialogue training aims to address more than 50 youth workers. We expect to reach 1000 young people through the online consultation and local actions."MITDENKEN.MITREDEN.MITBESTIMMEN - Structured Dialogue on Life Skills" will bring together young people, youth workers, decision-makers, youth experts, representatives of public authorities in charge of youth. As a concrete result of the events, young people will be able to make their voice heard (through the formulation of positions, proposals and recommendations) on how youth policies should be shaped and implemented in Europe. To ensure sustainability, in the last phase of the project we will concentrate on proper documentation and follow-up of the results.
