Mit der Sprache der Mode - Pflichtpraktika im Ausland für SchülerInnen und Studierende der Modeschule Graz
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project allows interested pupils of the fashion school in Graz, regardless of their language skills, to spend individually organized internships abroad during the (extended) school holidays and immediately after graduation. As it aims to interlink intensively language and culture, fashion and the European idea, Europe and the foreign languages are embedded into the professional training at school. The work placements are recognised as the compulsory internships required in this school type and will be documented in the Europass and ECVET. The internship providers are first rate European apparel companies and European fashion designers. At the same time the pupils and students expand their personal horizon considerably as they learn to appreciate the opportunities offered by the EU, to find their way through the EU administration to get in touch with potential employers, and to train their organizational skills. Learning a language and acquiring professional skills go beyond the school environment. In return, the school benefits from the companies' feedback which allows the adjustment of the school education. Since 2004 the financial sponsorship of the internships by the EU-Programme Erasmus+ has been enabling pupils and students to experience fashion on a European level during the (extended) school holidays. The European idea and another language and its culture are incorporated into the professional training as the receiving companies are quality representatives of the European textile industry and include young fashion designers, stylists, organizers of fashion shows or costume makers – the full range of the fashion industry. For the duration of a year the pupils are accompanied before, during and after the internship. The internships themselves last generally from six weeks to three months, with some of them even longer, and take place in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, England, Denmark and Sweden. The interns are alone or in pairs in the companies. The project is in its 8th year. The preparation is supported by a series of lectures and discussions under the title "The World is your Catwalk" where the international fashion world is explained to the pupils and students from the point of view of designers, apparel experts, company representatives and human resource executives, all with experience in occupational mobility. The project was already evaluated externally and was awarded a prize as innovative language project (SPIN). It is recognised as project for individualisation and promotion of gifted students, and was nominated twice by the national agency for the Lifelong Learning Award which it received in 2013. The insights gained through our internal evaluation serve as basis for the revision of our teaching objectives with regard to the requirements of the European textile industry as well as the further development the project itself.
