Migration im Donauraum Die Kolonisation im 18. Jahrhundert und ihre Folgen
Start date: May 1, 2012,

After the Ottomans had been driven back from large parts of Hungary, private landowners and the Habsburg court began settling the “Neoacquisita”. Recent results of research make it seem reasonable to suppose that during the 18th century more than 400.000 people emigrated to the Kingdom of Hungary. The settlers from German territories, mostly from Alsace, Lorraine, and Austria travelled by ship – the so called “Ulmer Schachteln” - down the Danube River to the areas of settlement which are situated in present-day Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Croatia. The emigration of these Danube-Swabians – how their collective name is – characterized the multi-ethnical regions along the Danube profoundly. For more than 250 years Banat, Backa and “Swabian Turkey” have been representing European examples for a peaceful multi-ethnical society. On the one hand, the exhibition and the catalogue describe the process of settlement in the course of the 18th century enquiring about the consequences regarding the infrastructure, economy, development of villages and cities, culture and living together in this region. On the other, it asks about the visible traces left by these settlements and their future as well. Such traces can be found in the architecture of the cities, the shaping of the landscape, in religious life and above all within the culture: ethnic cultural contact between Germans, Serbians, Hungarians, Romanians, Croats and other peoples led to an cultural transfer expressed in language, clothing, theatre, music or literature. The travelling exhibition is going to demonstrate the great significance of this common cultural heritage of the Danube region. In addition, guiding-tours and flyers showing important evidences of the history of migration at every exhibition station will be part of special touristic offers according to the motto “routes to the roots”. With that, both the on-location audience and the non-local tourists are to be attracted.
