Mejora de las competencias profesionales del claustro del IES Antoni Maura
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

IES Antoni Maura is a public school for secondary education. We teach ESO (secondary education), Bachillerato (upper secondary education), FP (Vocational Training) and adult education. We have a total of 1,941 students, of which 380 study ESO and 120 Bachillerato. The teaching staff amounts to 96 teachers. We are located in a periferic area in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) and the population has a low socioeconomical background. At present we have a very high rate of school failure (76,84% of the students who started 1st course of ESO in 2009-10 did not graduate in secondary education in 2012-13 nor continued their studies in order to graduate) and we have important discipline problems among our students, especially in the first years of ESO, which translates into a high number of warnings and general difficulties in managing conflicts. At the same time we have a very low percentage (5%) of teachers who are qualified to teach their subjects in English, which does not allow us to offer at present, the minimum number of subjects we are required to teach in a foreing language. Through the Erasmus+ mobility project we propose the participation of 14 teachers and school leaders in structured courses which will provide them with new methodological approaches. The aim is to improve the quality of our teaching activities and decrease school failure, as well as to improve students' behaviour while increasing the motivation both of the students and of the teaching staff. We also propose courses to enhance the teachers' competence in English, with the aim of increasing the motivation of teachers to study and use this language and, in the long-run, increase the number of teachers qualified to teach their subjects in English. Finally, we propose courses to enhance the managing skills of school leaders. Likewise, we may contribute to increase the quality of the education we provide and at the same time progress towards a better working environment for our teachers. The European dimension of the Erasmus+ Project is a big stimulus for us, because it will allow us to share experiencies and teaching materials with educational organisations from different countries which, besides being clearly enriching, will help us to strengthen the use of English as a language of contact and interaction. We consider that this european dimension of the Erasmus+ mobility project, the methodological changes it will imply, the increase in the professional development of teachers as well as in the quality of the education we offer, will have a very positive impact in enhancing the image of our school both in our neighbourhood, in the island of Mallorca, and even in an international context.
