Mejora de las competencias del profesorado de ESO para avanzar en el cambio de modelo educativo en el IES Antoni Maura
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: Oct 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

IES ANTONI MAURA is a public school for secondary education situated in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain. We have a total of 1871 students and 129 staff members. This Erasmus+ Project is centered in the students of ESO (351 students of compulsory secondary education) who come from a disadvantaged social background with a high risk of social exclusion. Among the students of ESO we integrate 27 different nationalities, together with a high number of gipsy students. We have a rate of 32,47% of students with special educational needs in compulsory secondary education (physical and mental handicaps, low academic level, language problems, emotional disorders, learning disorders, risk of social exclusion, etc.). The percentage of this kind of students is bigger in the lower courses: 41,74% of students with special needs in the 1st course of compusory secondary education and 46,98% in the second course. The last external evaluation by the IAQSE (The oficial institute for evaluation of the education) showed that we are the public secondary school with the lowest socioeconomical and cultural background in the Balearic Islands, we rated -1,69 in a scale from -2 to +2. Our rate of school failure in the last two years has been very high (61,6% of the students who started ESO in 2011-12 did not graduate in secondary education). Under these circumstances, teachers' motivation and their training and capacity to adapt to the specific needs of our studens is essential. In the last three couses we have started a gradual change in our teaching methodology based on: cooperative work, task/problem based learning and emotional education. We have based our change on benchmarking (observing good practice in other schools), internal and external teacher training, use of ICT in the classroom, creation of our own eductional materials, adapting to the different students abilities and levels and finally team work within the teachers at school and also in contact with other schools. We have implemented the project of change in the 1st and 2nd levels in compulsory secondary education (ESO). Now we plan to extend it to the 3rd level. At present we count on an important group of teachers who are motivated to participate in this innovation project. We also count on the support of families and the Educational Authorities. We have started to achieve good results in increasing the students motivation, behaviour and academic outcome and we have achieved prestige in the Balearic Islands as a reference centre for educational innovation. We think we are at the best moment to take the next step with the help of this Erasmus+ project. We propose 15 activities in Finland (structured courses that include class observation in schools in Finland) because it is of the leading countries in education, to learn about their teaching methodologies, attention to students with especial needs, reduction of school failure, and how to improve school outcome. We want to learn about their educational system, school organization, the methodology they use, what kind of training the teachers get, class management and how they have solved the problems. We think that participating in these activities (structured courses which include class observation in schools in Finland) through the Erasmus+ Project will motivate our teachers and will improve their teaching skills and performance. We will also get more teachers to engage with the project to offer our students a quality education that will help to improve the students study habits, their academic results and behaviour, and all this will contribute to reduce school failure. We also think it will contribute to improve the external image of our institute and our prestige. At present we are participating in the training of other school teachers in new methodologies and we want to lead the creation of a network of innovative schools in the Balearic Islands, as well as continue our participation in other Spanish and international school networks.
