Mejora de la metodología y el idioma del profesorado: un proyecto para la prevención a través de la internacionalización
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Juan de la Cierva is an Elementary, Middle, and High school in Palma de Mallorca in a lower middle-class neighborhood. In the past few years, the instructors in our Language Department have successfully developed several major linguistic projects to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages. At the same time, the number of students has increased over the last few years due to a growing demand by the Regional Department of Education. Therefore, we have three groups per each course level at the Elementary school. These students will soon be at Middle and High school and will have certain needs that a project as the one here proposed will surely satisfy. Due to the recent growing number of students, the school has to improve the quality of the non-language courses taught in a foreign language. Consequently, teachers need to be trained for this purpose. This is a project that seeks to prevent any kind of improvisation in the classroom. We aim to maintain the same quality obtained so far, as demonstrated by the available results. However, the teachers have felt a little overloaded after having led linguistic projects for a long time. They now feel the need to improve their teaching methodologies and their skills in the foreign language (English, in this particular case). Furthermore, the situation of the teaching and learning of Mathematics at our school is critical. Then, we need to create international profiles to lead future projects in collaboration with other schools abroad. The internationalization of our school would help students learn Mathematics in alternative ways. That being said, this project seeks to improve some of the teachers’ instruction methodologies and English-language skills so that they can continue working on teaching in a foreign language and they can also lead future international projects. The selected teachers will expand their knowledge when abroad and they will then share what they have learned with the rest of the faculty, especially with those Elementary school teachers that have already worked with the linguistic project, which students will continue in Middle and High school. This is the reason why we have selected the teachers that have the content knowledge and the communicative skills to share what they learn abroad with the rest of the faculty members. The selected teachers are seven: those who have already demonstrated a high level of motivation and involvement in such linguistic projects. This project has two main goals: the teachers’ training in new methodologies and the improvement of their foreign language skills. We plan to accomplish the first goal is in Finland due to their successful education system and their experience in teaching foreign languages. We currently use the same teaching methods at our school. We aim to accomplish the second goal in Ireland, as an appropriate real context for the learning of English as a second language. This will be a cooperative, interpersonal learning process since, as previously mentioned, the selected participants will be in charge of sharing the new knowledge with the rest of the faculty members. The results will help the faculty members, the school (which will continue implementing the current linguistic projects with the same teachers), and the students, who will directly benefit from the improved teaching methodology and the teachers’ better foreign language skills. This project improves the current linguistic projects taking place at our schools and, in the long term, it may be the first step towards the implementation of international missions, always aimed at improving our educational quality.
