PROJECT: IMPROVING THE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY OF STUDENTS IN ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE THROUGH THE ACQUISITION OF NEW METHODOLOGICAL TRENDS. Nowadays, we face an increasingly globalized world , which needs a versatile and dynamic society able to respond to this reality. Because of this, education , the cornerstone of society, copes with very significant challenges. Arzobispo Lozano School is trying to take part in it with this project , included in the European Erasmus Program + with KA1 activity type . It will be hold by a teacher of the English Department . The activity is short-lived, but the project will last one year. Students in our school comes mainly from a medium -low socio- economic background and 20% of them do not get the certificate in Compulsary Secondary Education, due to the fact , among other causes, that they do not achieve the required competence in the area of English . Therefore, the school has decided to struggle against this situation and this project will help to cover the following needs : - Improve the students`competence to address English itself successfully and as part of the Bilingual Program. - Motivate and educate students about the importance of foreign languages, appreciating cultural differences for better understanding between people. - Reduce the number of students with negative assessment in English and promote the qualification of students , giving them the opportunity to continue with non-compulsory education or face the labor market in a successful way. - Update and train language teachers through current methodological trends that help to answer to classroom diversity and linguistic recycling. - Encourage the use of ICT in the teaching of foreign languages . - To make the school aware of the importance of a European dimension. - Liaise with other professionals in Europe to carry out other possible future actions of the Erasmus program + (exchanges, job shadowing, etc.) . To achieve these objectives, participants are going to carry out a series of actions : 1. Preparation : - Reading recommended literature to follow the training (individual level). - Observation and comments about methodological problems appeared in the classroom to be answered during the training course. - Contact with the selected institution to conduct the course. 2 . During the activity : - Attendance at a course in the UK that covers the aforementioned needs . Especially, acquisition of new methodological trends, ICT , recycling in the language , knowledge of Anglo-Saxon culture and European contact with teachers. - Assessment of the progress when fulfilling the objectives . 3 .After the activity : - Implementation of the acquired skills . - Communication to the rest of the educational community. The project will make use of an integrated approach to answer to students´diversity, and to develop different communicative language skills by means of the four skills. We hope to achieve the following results: provide teachers new methodological strategies using ICT , increase students´ proficiency in English and contact with other European teachers. These results will impact students and teachers in our school, other schools facing the same problems through coordination meetings and finally any school through the use of the Internet and eTwinning . Finally, the long-term benefits will be the training and updating of teachers ready to cope with the complexity of the classroom, students with a linguistic competence capable of facing their professional future and thus, a more dynamic and skilled society and an open European School.
