Meeting Social Needs of Senior Citizens through Web 2.0 Technologies
Start date: Dec 1, 2010,

Web 2.0 technologies are a new wave of innovation that is rapidly changing the way we live, work, learn and interact. There is growing evidence that digital technology can greatly enhance both quality of services and quality of life, particularly for the most disadvantaged citizens and communities. But statistics still show a big gap between older and younger generations of Internet users. A key issue to the digital engagement of senior citizens is their motivation towards ICT and the benefits from using ICT by the target group. The aim of this project is to enhance the lives of senior citizens through the effective use of Web 2.0 technologies by focussing on their individual social and personal needs to facilitate their full inclusion in the digital age. The project will develop:- a Roadmap for Social Computing by Senior Citizens that will help education providers and trainers assess, plan and apply Web 2.0 tools into learning of senior citizens, - a set of innovative learning tools and resources designed to help older learners acquire new skills necessary to use Web 2.0 tools and use their potential to fulfil their own social and personal needs, - training materials and resources for trainers which can be used to help older adults learn how to use Web 2.0 technologies to meet their needs. Senior learners will have freedom to choose what they want to learn - their needs are the driver in the design of the learning process, access to the training is open to everyone, no matter what their knowledge and skill level is.The project helps older generation adjust to the changes happening in the society due to the emergence of Web 2.0 and the changes in terms of human interaction, information search and access to services. As a result of the project 250 senior citizens in Ireland, UK and Finland will gain new skills of Web 2.0 and will become active participants of the Information Society.
