Meeting learning needs of A8 migrants using ICTs.

Migration after EU enlargement in 2004 is a recent phenomenon but official statistics &research already show large flows from Poland & Lithuania to the UK & Ireland; thatmost work below their skill levels; and a lot more can to be done by adult educationauthorities in the UK & Ireland to meet their needs. The project aims to address thissituation by:-Supporting the integration of the new migrants in society and the economy especiallythose with lower levels of education, skills and ICT competency.-Developing new ways for Adult Education providers to assist migrants & to use thecompetences and educational experiences acquired prior to migration.-Supporting the acquisition of ICT competencies to help migrants meet their social,cultural and career needs.The specific objectives of the project are: to carry out a study to determine the needs &to map the qualifications of migrants from Poland & Lithuania to the system in the UK &Ireland; to develop a model, tools and strategies for adult education providers to engagethem & to deliver services; to use ICTs with embedded ESOL & Web 2.0 tools tosupport learning & social networking; and to pilot the tools and strategies developed toevaluate their effectiveness and impact.The outputs and products will consist of:- A documented and tested Model for adult education providers based on andragogicalprinciples which can be used in the formulation of strategies to attract, engage anddeliver effective initial programmes to migrants.- Tools & Programmes for tutors to deliver effective programmes to Polish andLithuanian migrants in the UK & Ireland.- Materials & courseware for Polish and Lithuanian migrant learners which assist them inattaining recognition of prior learning, gaining ICT competencies and assisting theirEnglish language competency through embedded ESOL.
