Meeting Europe+
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The JPT motto is : Active and unlimited. This means that we have adopted internationalization as our focus and in all departments internationalization will be the main goal. In order to achieve this aim project Meeting Europe+ seeks to improve staff knowledge, skill s and competences in the next academic year. Three years ago our college started Bilingual Education in all departments of the school: mavo/vmbo, havo and vwo. At the moment some 450 students are involved in all departments. Apart from the English department the following departments are involved: History, Social Studies, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Biology, Science, Music, Art and P.E. More staff need to be educated in order to teach all groups of students adequately. Moreover, International Baccalaureate English Language A en B will be introduced in the top forms. The English teacher will have to acquire specialized knowledge and the qualifications required. We would like to improve the language competences and knowledge of CLIL techniques in new bilingual teachers and we were advised to engage the other modern language departments in this development and pay more attention to the use of the foreign language in all classroom situations. One Biology teacher will examine the UK curriculum to find out if any components are applicable to our mavo-department where we really need a new approach to didactics and methodology. We would like to enlarge our knowledge of the didactics of the use of tablet computers in classroom situations. Currently we are experimenting with the ’bring your own device' concept and we are studying the possibility of introducing this concept for all our students in the college. We would also like to obtain more knowledge in the field of European art and culture for members of our art department. This project will enable the department to develop an extensive project about art and culture in Europe for our bilingual students. In all 17 teachers will participate in this training scheme; 9 for bilingual education /CLIL, 3 for IB English Language A and B, 2 for bilingual education/CLIL combined with specific areas of research, 1 for use of the foreign language in the classroom techniques and 2 for the Tap-Swipe-Pinch course on tablet computers. 11 of them are involved in bilingual education/ CLIL, 3 in IB English Language A and B and 2 have a great affinity with modern media. One of them is a teacher of German. These teachers have proposed these courses themselves and the Bilingual education/ CLIL coordinator picked the Bilingual education/CLIL course. The courses will be taken in groups or individually and the teacher s will report their experiences in a blog in the eTwinning Twinspace. In this way the courses can be evaluated in real time and at the end of the academic year an evaluation survey will be held among all participants. The teachers of English will qualify for IB English Language A en B at the end of the academic year. The Bilingual education/CLIL teachers will improve their language skills, fluency in English and their knowledge of CLIL classroom methods and strategies. Moreover, the teacher of Biology will acquire a lot of knowledge about the UK curriculum and will examine whether some components are useful for our mavo department. The teacher of German will be better skilled in the latest techniques for using a foreign language effectively in classroom situations and the teacher of art will examine thoroughly the role of Malta as the melting pot of European art. After her return she will share this knowledge and experience with her colleagues in the department. Two teachers will participate in the Euneos Tap-Swipe-Pinch course and get acquainted with the latest techniques and didactics in the use of tablet computers in combination with smartboards in the classroom and will share their experiences with all other colleagues who will introduce the use of tablet computers in their lessons All these courses will establish an improvement in teachers’ knowledge, skills and competences and will contribute to the fact that JPT will develop into truly international school that prepares and educates students for an international career all over the world.
