Medical peace work - a new European field of expertice in health work, violence prevention and peace building

The project Medical Peace Work – a new European field of expertise in health work, violence prevention and peace building. The project shall strengthen European physicians’ competence in violence prevention and sustainable peace building, starting from the situation that physicians who work with violence victims or in conflict areas require particular competences such as mediation, conflict resolution, human rights and ethics. This is a need formulated by European and international health organisations. Target groups focussed by the project are medical students and their instructors and physicians. The main expected results are a multimedia e-learning package containing seven study modules, a handbook and an online information centre and resource database for the use in medical education and vocational training. The course can be used as a self-study course which can be combined with a blended learning course. Valorisation includes the dissemination of the teaching materials at the partners’ teaching institutions and the European accreditation of the online course. Dissemination will be also done through the partners’ networks and with potential users. A website and articles will also be used for disseminating. The project shall have an impact on the work of physicians in that it shall create awareness and knowledge on their work of peace building. The skills of the target groups will be improved. Trainers will be encouraged to integrate the topic of medical peace work into teaching institutions.
