Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Maunulan yhteiskoulu and Helsingin matematiikkalukio is a truly international studying environment with International Classes ( 7th-9th graders and tuition completely in English) and foreign-background students in Finnish classes. From our school strategy 3 important areas have been involved in the project: Firstly the International Classes in the 7th-9th grades, where tuition is completely in English. Secondly the emphasis on languages in the school curriculum. And thirdly the international activities at school. One of its main strategic development areas for the future is its international section and international activities and contacts. The big challenge for the teachers is to meet the demands of the multicultural environment. Teachers need support in their strive to enhance quality of teaching and quality of learning. The objective of our project is to provide teachers with such skills so that they are better aware and can meet the social, lingvistic and cultural diversity at school. The school offers a variety of languages in the curriculum, they play a major part in students' schedules and students are encouraged to study several languages. Language teachers need regular updating and training in their skills. The school is involved in Comenius projects for many years. Participation in the training activities will contribute and enhance the European dimension at school. Participation in the courses can give rise to new projects and forums to co-operate with other schools locally or internationally. All in all there are 7 teachers participating in the project and different types of needs and subjects are represented in it. Chemistry /Maths and PE teachers teaching in the International Classes will get training in the English language, both written and spoken. They will attend a course in England to practise these skills. French teacher will enhance and update her skills in the French language and culture. Comenius co-ordinator and Finnish language teacher will update their French skills to improve communication in the international contacts. They will attend French courses in France. Visual Arts and Religion/Philosophy teachers will update their knowledge in the European religious and cultural heritage as well as their English skills. Both teachers teach also in the International Classes. Arts teacher will attend a course in Turkey and the Religion teacher will attend a course in Sicily. CLIL-teachers teaching in The International Classes are expected to become more confident in their spoken and written English language skills. The expected impact on their teaching is more natural communicative skills and more confidence when teaching in English. French teacher will gain more knowledge on the recent developments of French society and the lives of young people. She will be able to pass on the information to her students and encourage them to active contacts with French and European young people. Comenius-cordinator and Finnish Language teacher will improve their French skills' level. Due to this they will be able to better communicate with European partners in the school's Erasmus+ programme. Arts and Religion teacher will gain deeper knowledge of European cultures and more understanding of the necessity of the dialogue between different cultures and religions. They will also gain practise in their oral and spoken English skills. Teachers will carry out the preparations individually for the courses: preparing for the language courses revising their language skills and for the cultural courses acquiring information on geography, history, economy and cultural aspects of the country. English skills of teachers will be improved, both oral and written. Contacts with other CLIL-teachers will be created, enhancing networking on an European level. Tools to create teaching materials will be acquired and ideas where to find new teaching materials will be obtained. Teachers will become more confident in their relations with the students when communicating in English.Understanding European culture and its values will be enhanced and also seeing the necessity of the dialogue between different cultures and religions. Learning about museum pedagogy will be enhanced. Communication skills in different languages will improve teaching and relations in the international projects. The effects on a longer term for the school community can be seen in school's many emphasis areas . International Classes are an important and constantly growing sector at school. Teachers using English as a tool need support and practise in their language skills. The bigger the international sector is in the future the more demand there will be on teachers with fluent command of English Cultural diversity in the Finnish classes is growing, so deeper awareness of cultural and religious differences will help to meet the challenge. All these measures will on a longer term prevent social and cultural exclusion.
