Mastering Learning Disability
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aim of this Project is to increase competencies of teachers in helping students with specific learning disability in our learning institution. During preliminary assessments in our institution, we have found that there are some students with learning disability at almost all class levels and in a general perspective the teachers do not have sufficient information on this subject. Based on these findings, in this project we first aim to increase awareness levels of teachers on specific learning disorders. Other than this, we have several other primary aims. We also purpose to make teachers to have a great deal information on specific learning disorder, to support students with learning disability in classes and learn how to use auxiliary technology to determine these students. Further to our aims, the teachers would learn which teaching methods are the most appropriate ones for these students and how to use them. Other aims are to increase presentational intervention skills of our teachers, to help teachers create appropriate learning context for advanced problems by using scientific methods and technics, to increase their knowledge and teaching skills for being able to inform parents on subject and counsel them when needed. To reach our identified goals, all of the teachers in our institution should have prominent knowledge base on specific learning disabilities and develop skills on helping such students. As the financial sources we could get for this project is limited, we decided to set the number of participants on these courses at a total of 20. The participants will be selected mainly among our institution staff based on their knowledge levels as determined after “Dyslexia Knowledge Quiz”. Teachers who get low scores from “Dyslexia …. Test” will be referred to the course entitled "Special Needs and Learning Disabilities: how to deal with them? Theoretical and Practical experiences” in Italy which mainly focuses on theoretical concepts on specific learning disabilities. Because of their assumed readiness on subject, teachers who get relatively higher scores will be referred to other two application oriented courses which will be held in United Kingdom ("Teaching pupils with special educational needs) and in Czech Republic ("Special Needs Children"). Openness to innovations, willingness to receive such education and volunteering to work in our or other institutions within the Project will be considered in selection of participants. Participants will share the skills they acquired from the course educations with other staff in regular information meetings. The skills and good practices learned in foreign countries will be carried out in classes and impacts on students will be observed and tested. Similarly the impact of Project on parents will also be determined after providing necessary information to parents. Besides, we will also assess the influence of Project on levels of teacher competencies by using appropriate measuring toolsThe activities within this Project will not only develop the competencies of our teachers and institution but also allow us to share good practices in Europe, enable flow of information on the subject, and spread learned skills to other interested teachers and institutions in our city. Considering the fact that content of previous related projects are mostly limited with awareness dimension of this issue, this Project will be a pioneer with its intended goal of increasing competencies of teachers to deal with special students. The results of this Project will be shared with provincial and district directorates of national education hoping that it will constitute an example for future project on many other similar possible projects. With this Project, we expect to search for, receive and share European good practices on learning disabilities within our school context which would bring our school practices an international perspective. Our institution will benefit from our staff infrastructure for Erasmus + program strategic partnership projects which are planned to be carried out in near future.
