Maritime Regions: Making Museums Commercially Competitive (MarMuCommerce)

The MarMuCommerce partners aim to create a business model that introduces commercial marketing techniques and tools to public heritage institutions and thus enable them to develop and apply innovative concepts to generate additional income. Achievements: At the beginning of the project, preparatory work was carried out in order to establish the structure of the project and the methods of operation. This allowed a common understanding among partners about the work to be realized. Furthermore, a cooperation agreement was signed to reinforce the common procedures. At this final stage, 9 working group meetings/workshops and 1 seminar were held. An analysis of current conditions of museum partners was carried out in order to integrate results obtained in the business model and training modules. Good practices, indicators and crucial stake holders were identified. The consortium finalized a quality handbook defining common standards for best practice in the commercial re-orientation of museums and maps of processes to implement quality management in museums. Variables, indicators and potential problems related to the business plan and model were defined. Statues, organizational structures and legal information were collected and summarized in order to decide about the legal structure. The alternatives proposed (foundation of a SCE) have been analysed. Partners, after hearing the opinion of their legal advisors decided not to found a joint company but to cooperate on the basis of multilateral cooperation agreements, with 2 instruments: a Framework agreement for the whole cooperation activities and a concrete agreement for each commercial operation. After the finalization of the framework agreement and the concrete agreement for the engagement in the new pilot commercial activities the consortium is ready for signatory procedures and the charges of Joint Steering Committee were appointed. 5 training modules are ready and have also been implemented and tested including the recommendations made by advisory members and the targets of the training sessions. The exhibition is ready and serves as a marketable product and also as a catalogue of the products/services to be provided by the consortium. The exhibition on 'European Maritime Heritage' is ready and available under the site: www.marmucommerce.com. Partners decided to substitute the old tool by a new one to engage in the commercial activities that is active and working. The product/ service to be commercialized were defined as: 'creating and distributing temporary exhibitions' (see D3.5.1) and reflects the new mindset and the market-orientated philosophy assumed by museums.Moreover, the exchange of experiences in the organization of exhibitions the communication activities of some heritage partners go beyond the project scope. The MarMuCommerce project was presented, among others, in a relevant international event, like the International Congress of Maritime Museums (Malta, Oct 07) and the coordination of this participation was tailored, preparing dissemination materials. Till now, 4 press conferences have been organized, 6 newsletters have been edited, 1 TV broadcasting has been produced and 4 articles were published (see Final Report chapter 4.1).
