Mail Road (Postvägen)

The aim of the Postvägen project, whose theme and contents build on the historical mailroad established by queen Kristina, from Sweden over Åland into Southwest Finland, was toestablish a project entity where industry and culture are mutually supportive. By means ofPostvägen (The mail road), the three archipelago regions would get the possibility to exposethe tourism industry, cultural workers and craftsmen, who all make a living from the visitorsalong this historical road. The project built a network between the tourist industries in thethree archipelago regions. Postvägen could, during its last year of activity, count over 100members including entrepreneurs, local folklore societies, museums and galleries. The historical Postvägen still exists today, thanks to the fact that the project was welldocumented by traffic signs in all three regions, as well as uniform information signs alongthe way. This was in itself historical, because it was the first time that a cross- borderactivity was permitted to use uniform symbols by the traffic authorities. The road, including its history, is documented in book form as well as a travelling exhibition with asolid exhibition catalogue. Official Postal route guides have been authorised in all threeregions, and three associations have been established that will continue the work. ThePostvägen logotype has become an established symbol for quality, hospitality and consideration, and the yearly events Postforslingen and Postrodden are well exposed public events.
