Macedonian Belgian Youth Scout Exchange
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The main activitity of this project is a youth exchange in which a Belgian scout group will visit a Macedonian scout group in Macedonia (FYROM). In total 27 16-19 years olds will particpate in this project toghether with 5 leaders. The participants are member of the oldest age groups of their scout organisation and next year they can choose whether or not they would like to become youth leader. The purpose of the exchange is to familiarise the young partcipants with tools and methodology to become good youth workers and volunteers. The project focuses on creating a global mindset and openess and understanding towards other cultures among the young participants. Our aproach is to stimulate peer learning among the particpants: they will learn from their peers from the other country new methods and techniques used by youth leaders. Apart from this focus on peer learning, the project offers a broad range of activities in which participant can enrich their personal skills via non formal learning. We distinguish two sorts of skills, 'scout leader skills' and 'soft skills': -soft skills: taking the initiative, teamwork (taking responsability and encourage others to take their responsabilities), coaching, mentoring, public speaking, motivating, being adaptable to new situations, creating a global mindset, financial knowledge, learning about other cultures, self awarement, leadership, empathy, enthusiasm, self-awareness, awareness of the diffences of cultures, knowledge of the the origins and mechanisms intolerance. creativity, organisation and planning. -scout leader skills: reading a map, working with a compass, hiking itself, hiking with a group, finding directions, camping: selecting a camp site, setting up camp, tent pitching, cooking, First aid, pioneering and lashing. These skills are taught in a way that our members can easily teach them to others when they are scout leaders. We will also focus on the differences between the Belgian and Macedonian scout groups. At the end of the project, participants will have grown in these skills, which they can later apply as youth worker and in their personal and professional life. Participant will be likely to have a greater openess and understanding toward other cultures. Upon completion of this exchange, participants can also reflect critically on their own personal development as on their own thinking about cultural differences and diversity.
