The new national curriculum of 2016 in Finland will be placing a new emphasis on global education and internationalisation. The main objective behind the application has been the need to develop concrete tools for dealing with the new demands of the curriculum and the changes taking place in the field of education in Finland. The Nuoliala Primary School have already set up a team of teachers focusing on developing global education in our school. The “Globetrotter’s Pass” is the first tool created to visualise and bring into practice the different activities the staff members as well as the pupils take part in during the academic year. The activities chosen for the pass are those which promote the values of integrity, equality, solidarity as well as sustainable development. We are applying for six teachers to go on a Job Shadowing visit in Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom. Through Job Shadowing we aim to achieve multiple things. Firstly, to be truly global and understand what it means, we would like to enhance and develop the “Globetrotter’s Pass” as well as other similar tools together with the partner schools. The co-operation with international partners in such manner would be extremely fruitful and bring new perspectives on the ways of carrying out global education. After all, any teaching tool that would bring the everyday lives of different schools across Europe side by side would improve the quality of global education and have outstanding long-term effects on all parties involved. Secondly, it is vital to learn about the way other teachers steer their way in the field of global education. There is a real need for our school to create long lasting international contacts through which we can understand our own practice better and improve it. Thirdly, it is crucial for every pupil to be aware of the world outside and the way they are connected to it in their everyday lives. Through co-operation with the partner schools a sense of belonging to an international community will hopefully touch the pupils and make them aware of their own place in the world. Language skills of the teachers and pupils will improve during the project as will language teaching in our school as well. Job Shadowing is a great way to enhance our knowledge on how to provide the pupils with the necessary skills to function in a world that is increasingly multicultural. We are hoping to send a group of staff members with varied roles in the school to the three partner schools in Europe mentioned above. The participants will have knowledge of class teaching, language teaching and special needs teaching. We have started the co-operation with the partner schools and continue to do so via email, the e-Twinning space as well as skype and classroom blogs. We have introduced our idea of creating a shared tool such as the “Globetrotter’s pass” to the contact members in the schools and the response has been extremely positive. Job-shadowing will provide us with an opportunity to meet face-to-face and exchange our ideas. To summarise, the potential long-term benefits of the project, as touched upon above, would be; creating a shared practical tool for global education used in all the partner schools, creating a long-term co-operational relationship with the partner schools and developing skills to educate the pupils in how to act and function in the increasingly multicultural and global world.
