The language of safety and health signs and
signals in wood industry
Each year thousands of accidents are recorded in wood industry. The recent research carried out byEuroStat and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has shown that a great number ofpeople in the EU lose their lives at work and a far greater number are injured. The rate is the highestin Wood Industry, where about 10 % of workers have an accident at work every year. As well as thehuman suffering involved, there is an economic impact. According to the European Statistics onAccidents at Work (ESAW) about 4.8 million accidents result in more than 3 days of absence fromwork in the EU countries. Individuals, businesses and society all pay the price, so it is vital to stay onour guard to combat against accident risks. The proposed project is in accordance with the new five-year strategy for Safety and Health recentlylaunched by the European Commission, covering the period of 2007 – 2012 and aiming to reduce by25% the total incidence rate of accidents at work per 100 000 workers in the EU.The partners’ network has recognized lack of thorough training on the specific system of safety andhealth signs and signals, as an essential part of the whole training for providing safe workingenvironment. All partners also confirmed the lack of specific training on the system of safety andhealth signs and signals in the curricula in their educational systems. We established contacts withmanagers from SMEs and companies in wood industry who also confirmed current needs for thisparticular training. SMEs, in particular, have fewer resources to put complex systems of workerprotection in place and tend to be more affected by the negative impact of health and safety problems.A great number of hazardous situations occur either due to little knowledge by newly appointedworkers or underestimation by experienced ones of the system of safety and health signs and signals. We agreed that the mobility of workforce in the EU makes it necessary to establish easy of access, based on European Standards, training on the system of healthy and safe signs and signals in woodindustry. The pilot project is aimed at providing training methodology and materials for lifelong learning forvocational college students, university students, and professionals in wood industry and SMEs inrelation to the language of safety and health signs and signals. The goal is to further train existing andfuture professionals in the field of wood industry in order to improve their qualification skills inproviding safer, healthier and more productive working environment in accordance with the objectivesof the Community Strategy 2007 – 2012.The project aims will be achieved through the development of:1.Interactive multimedia product for e-learning in English, Bulgarian, Greek, Swedish and Slovaklanguages.2. Development of a manual on safety and health signs and signals in Wood industry.3. Training of targeted groups: development of differentiated approach to training.4. Partners’ web site with continually updated on-line information; information brochure. The innovation of the project is the provision of a tool (Interactive multimedia product for e-learning)including relevant and innovative lifelong learning content, the use of which will guarantee safer andhealthier working environment. The proposed training product will be available to a wide range ofprofessionals and students for transnational e-learning.
