Limerick Co Co - The Voyage of Orphans
Start date: Jul 1, 2009,

The project is an ambitious film and theatre initiative that proposes to build on the existing artistic skills of the youth theatre, developing a creative engagement with cultural and social issues surrounding migration such as; racism, identity, poverty and equality through the dramatic portrayal of an historical story. The Co. LYT is a mixed gender group of twenty young people aged between 15-18yrs, living in rural Lough Gur, Co. Limerick. We plan to devise and perform a short film and three act play about the 4,000 female Irish Famine Orphans who were shipped to Australia between the years 1848-50. We will meet each week and use historical material, eyewitness accounts and illustrations as a springboard for improvisation, recording ideas, improvisations, images, music and sounds to help us create scenes. We will work with a drama facilitator to weave these scenes into a play with a film prologue. The weekly meetings, film and play performances will be in the local community theatre, The Honeyfitz. We will create an exhibition of our research in the foyer and have approached KidsOwn Publishing partnership to work with us in creating a book of the process.
