"LGBT Student Visibility in 3rd Level Education "
Start date: Feb 1, 2016, End date: Mar 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

in 2013 Russia passed 'anti-gay' law that stigmatizes gay people and bans giving children any information about homosexuality. This law made violent attacks toward LGBT* people, or perceived LGBT* people a common everyday and legal practice. Hand in hand with those attacks, we are also witnessing denial of basic human rights of LGBT* people across Eastern and Central Europe, with LGBT* community in Latvia, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine and Croatia all experiencing conflicts.Through this EVS project, we want to offer LGBT* young people that come from Eastern Europe a chance to actively participate in creation and dissemination of LGBT* projects on local, national and international level. We want to offer them an opportunity to be the agents of social change and a chance to voice their opinions in matters related to the LGBT* community. This is a unique opportunity for LGBT* young people that come from Easter Europe to travel, learn, discover and experience the reality lived by LGBT* young people in Ireland and other European countries, where LGBT* rights get more opportunities to be discussed and changed. This experiential learning model promotes youth activism and provides more opportunities for further cooperation and engagement between LGBT* organizations on European and local level. This year, Dundalk Outcomers will be hosting two volunteers, one from Romania and one from Russia. Both volunteers will engage in diverse range of activities to gain more experience, knowledge, and better understanding of LGBT* activism and community work. Volunteers will be made part of the organization at full sense- they are going to support and assist project coordinator and youth worker in different areas and activities, they will be integrated with the young people attending the center, but they will also be responsible for developing their own personal projects and activities. Primary task of the volunteers will be to plan and coordinate an event for LGBT* students in 3rd level education, with the support of the project coordinator and the youth coordinator. Main objective of this event will be to create charter of LGBT* rights for 3rd level education. Throughout this project both volunteers will have a chance to improve their communication, leadership, group work, team work, decision making and different creative skills. By participating in this project, we expect that both volunteers will develop better understanding of different cultures and specific needs and issues they are dealing with. We expect that they will feel encouraged and empowered to take active roles in similar initiatives and projects in their local communities and international projects that will challenge discrimination and prejudice towards LGBT* community. This is the first time that Dundalk Outcomers will host 2 EVS volunteers from Easter Europe and we see this project as a great model of raising awareness withing LGBT* and local community about the issues that LGBT* communities in these countries have to face every day. We hope this will empower members of local community to challenge any type of discrimination, bullying or prejudice that they might witness. These types of projects strengthen international cooperation between LGBT* communities, important in dealing with common issues that LGBT* community is facing, on European level. In long term, we hope that this specific international multicultural projects will encourage and motivate other LGBT* communities, youth leaders, teachers, parents and activist to initiate similar projects and actions that will provide safeguard of sexual minorities within different public and private environments.By hosting an event that will bring together LGBT* students in the 3rd level education, we hope to ensure visibility of this minority group that will result in more equal treatment in higher education system and strengthen the cooperation between different sectors and institutions.
