Let the music be our voice - a collaboration between partner cities
Start date: Aug 1, 2015, End date: Jul 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The idea of the project came out during the visit of young artists (musicians, architects, street artists) from Würzburg in Umeå in June 2014. Umeå was in 2014 the European Capital of culture. The participants from both cities which are partner cities, decided that they want to continue the cooperation. They have experienced by themselves how important it is to exchange, to meet other peers from abroad, to learn each other and create together. The two organisations: Stadtjugendring Würzburg and KF Kretsen from Umeå stayed in contact and decided to organise a youth exchange for young musicians from partner cities (Umea in Sweden and Würzburg in Germany). The young musicians would like to meet with each other to create music together, to learn from each other, to have the space to play freely. They would like to create a performance and show it to the local community The other aim is to get to know the partner city with an emphasis on the music scene in each city. The other topic which is important for the young people is the situation in Europe, the acts of discrimination. From each organisation we are going to invite 10 participants (between 18 and 25 years old) who are interested into music. The Stadtjugendring will look participants within its member organisations as well as from the competition 'SJR sucht Nachwuchstalente' and Stage 'U25' – both actions are in the frame of the 'Umsonst und Draussen Festival'. The participants from Sweden are the members of KF Kretsen organisation who is working with various artists in different age. We are planning two youth exchanges – first in Würzburg (03.-07.11.15) and then in Umea in Sweden (11. – 15.04.2016). During the both meeting the young artists from Germany and Sweden are going to integrate with each other, practise and learn music together, prepare a performance for the local community (in Jugendkulturhaus Cairo in Würzburg and in Umeå Folkets Hus). They are also going to participate in workshops about the intercultural learning (basing on the situation in their cities) as well as learning about Human Rights Education. One of the methods to get to know the partner cities and especially their music scene will be visiting each evening the music venues. Before the first exchange the group leaders from Germany and Sweden (two per each country) are going to meet in Würzburg to plan the project (Advanced Planning Visit in Würzburg 18.-19.09.15). Both of the cities are partner cities so it is important to connect them in different fields. Using the tool of music we would like that young artists from different countries meet with each other, that they exchange their skills and experiences. Based on the situation in their cities we would like to explore what is the situation of youth as well as migrants and refugees in the city – are there any acts of discrimination (why, where) and what can we do – as young musicians to prevent or fight with it. As we have already seen there is a need to organise more international projects between the partner cities, especially for youth. Maybe we can start to send EVS volunteers between the cities or organise more youth exchanges.
