Let's make our school more international- Βήματα για την ευρωπαϊκή ανάπτυξη του σχολείου μας
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The 8th High school (Lyceum) of Trikala is a newly established school unit of general education operating since 2006 in the prefecture of Trikala. 254 students (15-18) are currently enrolled and 26 teachers are employed in the school. A significant number of our students comes from vulnerable backgrounds such as economic migrants and unemployed and single parent families. Therefore, based on the school's strategic planning, teachers seek effective ways, such as continuing education and implementation of European programs, to prepare students for tomorrow's European identity and to prevent early school leaving by minimizing social discrimination and promoting the learning of foreign languages. Taking into account the changes in the European labor market in recent years due to the economic crisis, our school needs have also changed. The aim of the school therefore is to prepare our students for the new realities of the European labor market. For this reason it is necessary to improve program- project management and teaching skills of our staff through their participation in European training courses and job shadowing. The five (5) teachers who participated in the project attended training courses and job shadowing abroad since their language proficiency (English, French, Italian) is from very good to excellent, disseminated the acquired knowledge and the European idea to colleagues and students and integrated them in the teaching process as much as possible. The training activities that teachers engaged were: 1. The participation in a training course for the management of European programs. It actually contributed to the enhancement of intercultural and project management skills for the successful implementation of multilateral partnerships and their incorporation in our school European Development Plan. The result was an application for a new multilateral partnership with a Hungarian school as the coordinator. The training course -via the teachers who participated- gave incentives to the rest of the staff to adopt and implement intercultural learning and process in the school curriculum. It also contributed to the enhancement and implementation of a multilateral European partnership, which was ceated during the time of the seminar with a school of Hungary as the coordinator. Regarding the impact on our students, we expect their participation in this partnership to enhance language proficiency in foreign languages and sociability skills that contribute to the future development of their European identity in the context of European and international labor markets. 2. Job shadowing in an Italian school; The objectives of the project was to monitor the functioning of the school that we visited and this helped us in the drafting of our own Internal School Regulation, to watch the teaching process, to observing the organization and operation of the laboratory, to familiarize with the curriculum and the exams as well as other actions undetaken by the school. In this way we obtained skills, changed attitudes and behavior in order to meet the project objectives. The field monitoring, photo-video, discussion with the management team, teachers, students and parents, the use of questionnaires to be completed by students and teachers were the basis of the methodology and the activities of the project. The results of job shadowing were the fact that we acquired new ideas for the formation of our european-oriented Internal School Regulation, knowledge of new teaching methods, skills for the better management of the science laboratory, familiarization with actions that contribute to the school opening in society and the elimination of the phenomenon of bullying. The realization of this project was an invaluable help in designing new Erasmus + actions (one KA1 application and two participations in KA2) for the continuous interaction between educators around Europe. Overall, such training activities support a new culture and methods of learning, good practices, help innovation and skills, knowledge and experience, bring together different cultures, tactics and strategies dealing with international experiences, strengthen the European dimension of the school and build business ties and European cooperation networks.
