LET'S GO BEYOND THE BORDERS
Our school is one of the most succesful school in our town, Erdek, which is located in semi rural area, far away from the city. As a secondary school in a small town, we believe that we have to keep up pace with the constantly changing world through language education and use of technology. We have highly skilled teachers but our staff needs to be more confident and proficient in English in order to teach English to our students. They also need a wider repertoire of teaching methodology. And most of the teachers are not skilled in using technology or they are reluctant to learn new skills. Since languages and technology will play a key role in curricula across Europe, the training of teachers and development of methods are necessary to improve the quality of language education and effective use of technology in our school.
Since we aim to improve language education and effective use of technology in our school and increase contact between countries, we have chosen the course "Content Language Integrated Learning(CLIL)" and Effective Use of Technology in Teaching- A Blended Approach ".
The training activity "Content Language Integrated Learning" is an approach that uses a wide variety of communicative activities to develop language competence and also builds participants’ confidence in teaching through English. Participants will have the opportunity to expand specific subject vocabulary as well as participate in practical group methodology sessions which provide them with ideas and materials that they can use upon their return to their own country.
The training activity "Effective Use of Technology in Teaching- A Blended Approach" will provide ideas how technology can be used effectively in teaching and learning environment.The staff will be more confident and more able when understanding and communicating in English and in integrating more technology into their classrooms. The training course will develop and update of their understanding of modern technology and how it can be applied pedagogically to enhance motivation and interest in and outside class. They will be able to use a greater repertoire of communicative, student-centred teaching methods and see examples of best practice in teaching with technology. It would be helpful to be able to compare what they do with other EU teachers and consider improvements for future teaching.
The participants in our project are the experienced teachers and directors who have big ideas for better classrooms and better school education and they are eager to take part in future projects to enhance school profile. Two English teachers and one counsellor will join the training activity "Content Language Integrated Learning". We believe that English teachers will develop new methods and techniques to improve language in school and the counsellor will guide and coach the students through the learning process and give special attention to nurturing students' interests and self confidence. The principal, a vice principal, a Technology and Design teacher and an English teacher will join the training activity "Effective Use of Technology in Teaching - A Blended Approach" to update training on technology and integrating technology into their lessons and school. The course with blended learning would allow our staff to be more familiar with e-learning through the medium of technology and then refreshing their English in the UK.
We believe that the participation in these training activities will broaden the horizons of all staff and students in school because the participants will adapt the new education programmes they learn during the training course to the students. They will introduce the educational opportunities to their colleagues to help to develop education. Also, they will introduce the European culture to the staff so that they can have real information about Europe. They will teach English more realistically and use technology more effectively and keep the students more motivated by bringing modern approaches and creating new techniques and using technology and they will be able to learn and use English better in this way .
Finally; we all aim to celebrate and encourage innovation in every aspect of the school and make positive changes not only from the top down but also from the bottom up so that we can have the chance to "go beyond the borders" and get the European rational way of life and logical thinking and apply in our organisation.
