Let's do it! South Baltic school initiatives to stop climate change (Let's do it!)
Start date: Jun 30, 2015, End date: Oct 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Local actors, especially in the school sector, are hesitating to join cross-border cooperation projects for the following reasons: lack of knowledge about management of EU funded projects, lack of personnel capacities & time to deal with EU projects, missing language skills & uncertainty about the personal capability to implement international activities. School teachers are often left alone with new ideas on informal learning methods & the workload when doing school projects. Since they often have to do such work voluntarily, only the highly committed teachers and schools carry out international activities. The challenge is to raise awareness & encourage school actors to start international cooperation projects on their own & set up routines for it. The projects objective is to provide a test-ground for the participating schools & teaching staff to realize international pupils & teachers exchanges on the common topic climate change in order to: set-up long-lasting relations to other schools within the South Baltic area, to learn how to work internationally by doing it, to gain positive experiences from an intercultural dialogue & get routine in organizing international school projects. At the same time youngsters from smaller municipalities shall have the opportunity to get into an intercultural dialogue on climate change challenges & climate protection efforts with other youngsters from the South Baltic area. The most difficult challenge for climate protection is to raise awareness among citizens to change behaviors into a more sustainable lifestyle & to foster own initiatives. Voluntary initiatives are lacking of talents from younger generations. Environmental education must already begin in school to sensitize early for a climate-friendly behavior. School projects that make regular environmental education are rare. The project is aiming at permanently anchoring environmental education programs in schools through the implementation of pilot measures. Expected Results: >Setting up direct international relations between schools & smaller municipalities>Capacity building of small municipalities and schools in realizing international school exchange projects>Setting up routines & ambassadors at schools for future international cooperation>Starting an intercultural dialogue between school students, teachers & municipal actors from the local level on sustainable lifestyles & consumer behavior in their neighborhoods, different national traditions of energy production & concepts for a sustainable future>Contribute to the green growth by awareness-raising among school students & their parents for climate change issues; exchanging on and facilitating environmental education programmes on an international playing field to increase the attention for the cross-border relevance of climate protection & to foster green initiatives >Develop good models for school projects on sustainable energy issues & environmental education > demonstrate and test how youngsters can start their own initiatives for green growth & sustainable living / coaching of young & green initiatives>Develop and test informal learning methods for environmental education in schools to generate interest and increase awareness among youngsters to deal with this issue (e.g. climate theatre, flash mobs, travelling exhibition, energy saving competitions, creative garbage recycling, guerilla gardening etc.)>Realizing awareness-raising campaigns for green growth on local level made by school students themselves (what can you do for climate protection in your neighborhood?)>The pilot measures to be implemented in schools should be exemplary and serve as demonstration projects, which are transferable to other schools in the SB Region. >Beside the implementation of cross-border school projects and school student exchanges, workshops & environmental education seminars will be offered for teachers to develop environmental education projects based on informal learning methods.
