PROJECT
FINISHED
Since 2012, the children of Saltoschool de Klimboom have officially been given the opportunity to learn English at an early age (starting at age 4 in group 1). Prior to 2012, the Klimboom has been provided Early English education for over 2 years on an experimental basis to a selected group of students. The Klimboom views language as an important means to communicate with the fellow man about the world around them. If pupils master the English language, pupils can communicate with others all over the world, as there are over 1 billion native and secondary English speakers. As English is used as the primary medium for academic research and business, the importance of the English language is undeniable in the modern age. In addition, de Klimboom sees many other benefits of starting with teaching English at an early age.Despite the fact that we began our program several years ago, our program has not developed as quickly as we anticipated, due to employee-related changes. Not only were there several changes among the teaching staff, there were also many changes in the management, too (three different head masters in three years).Recently, we have actively reinvigorated our Early English Education program (“EEE”). We have taken on many new initiatives during dedicated study days, meetings and plenary sessions, including:• mapping our shared vision • mapping how we want to shape• prioritizing learning objectives • determining bottlenecks and successes• establishing an Early English Working Group• organizing various professionally-led workshops, main focus areas:o teacher skillso inspiring with practical activities, o and language skills. Early English is on a regularly scheduled basis during various sessions of the agenda. The Early English committee consults with the head master throughout the year. In our school plan, we refer to Early English as an important part of 21st century skills. It may be clear, that our school is very active with shaping our Early English language teaching. But, we are not there yet!Our school is in need of teachers who possesses sufficient knowledge and specific skills which are necessary for teaching English at an early age. At the moment, this knowledge and these skills are insufficient. Accordingly, nine teachers are willing to professionalize themselves throughout a practical teacher training course in one of the participating countries. The focus will be on methodology, teaching skills and classroom English. Teachers will work at their personal development with the help of a Personal Development Plan (“PDP”). The teacher training course abroad is an important part of the PDP. This PDP will be a starting point for various interviews with the head master. The EEE Coordinator is also involved. In addition to the expected increased competencies in teaching skills, language skills and exposure to and development of new educational materials, we also expect that this project will boost the self-confidence and creativity of teachers. We believe the teacher’s enhanced knowledge and skills gained from this program will have a dramatic impact on the quality of our EEE. Most importantly, we hope to see a positive impact on the language development and language awareness of pupils. As a result, pupils should feel more comfortable with speaking in English, gain more confidence, become more aware of the world around them and -eventually- increase their end language level. We expect the participating teachers to share their new ideas and enthusiasm with all of the school colleagues, as well as, share their specific knowledge and skills with the rest of the team We plan to budget time to facilitate this knowledge transfer. In addition, we want to develop an easy- and- quick- to- read “Tips- and- Tricks” book for teachers. No doubt, we assume that the impact of the project will multiply. Not only the actual participating teacher’s Early English Education teaching skills will be lifted to a higher level, but the entire EEE program should become better. All pupils will benefit.Within the SALTO group of schools in Eindhoven (the board of de Klimboom and 21 other schools), de Klimboom has an unique profile and skills in regards to Early English. We are prepared to and plan to share our knowledge, skills and experience with other schools. De Klimboom wants to associate with an Early English Education network. The experiences of the participants and the formal evaluation of the project will be used to develop and shape our school’s language policy, which is currently under development. Therefore, the learning from this program will be retained and reinforced with new teachers in the future.
