Lebenswelten erleben- Vorurteile abbauen
Start date: Aug 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Two years ago, the community Eppelheim contacted us- the youth work- with the proposal of building up contact to their French twin town Dammarie-les-Lys. During the first exchange-contacts between the German and French youth, we were confronted with cultural prejudices and stereotypes. After these first contacts we presented them the idea of the youth exchange and asked which kind of activities they would prefer and like to share with each other in future. The youngsters began to develop initial ideas which drew the theme "Living environment" at the center. They considered what they would like to show the French youth from their environment and what they themselves would like to meet the other way around. The developed project is including four activities for 16 german and french participants in the age of 13 to 17 years. In preparation, we are planing to choose a female and a male "project manager" (1 German, 1 French) to act as a coordinator and contact possibility during the project period. The young people will do an exploration of their social environment, both in Eppelheim/Germany and in Dammarie-les-Lys/France. They will be equipped with cameras to capture their world in pictures. They will get to know their prejudices, typical German and typical French dishes, their leisure activities, typical meeting places in public spaces, to cook together and (if required) to live in guest families. Therefor the young participants will be involved in all the main decisions during the project. With our project we especially would like to integrate young people, whose living environment is characterized by economical, social and cultural barriers. Above all, we would like to address the specific topics "Equal Opportunity / participation" with our project. We want to promote the intercultural competence of the participants, because many of our young recipients have never been abroad, except in their own home-country. The envisaged project will integrate young people with little opportunities to enable participation and the possibility to reconsider their prejudices and insecurities. In their social environment they are either "invisible" or attract negative attention. This is why we want to change the view from the outside (especially from the community) on the positive aspects and achievements of young people. Because young people have dreams and they are the future of an in fact insecure (often through media reports) but also promising society. We want to involve the local media during the project, the participants also will get the possibility to present their results at some typical community festivals. It´s a chance to deserve positive attention, which can also be used as a push and sense of achievement.
