Learning through Volunteering
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Mar 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This is an EVS-project involving a volunteer from Spain. The background is as follows: After having carried through several youth exchanges, Svendborg Yoth School and Clubs now wishes to be involved in a project over a longer period of time. We thought welcoming a volunteer at our school and clubs and at Svendborg Outdoor School for Environmental Studies would give young people in Svendborg the opportunity to engage in discussions and have various activities together with a volunteer. This will help us achieve the objectives which is to develop a healthy lifestyle and to foster European citizenship. At the same time the volunteer will enhance his communicative skills in a foreign language (English) and try out some of the ideas he has developed alone and together with his sending organization. The volunteer is a young man from Spain who has experiences with coaching young people in various sports activities. Now he wants to improve his intercultural competences and has sent his application to us because he thinks that we will be able to help him do so. The following activities will take place: In the clubs the volunteer will be together with young people in the age group 13-18. He will have discussions with them and thus help them develop their intercultural competences. In members' councils he will discuss subjects such as, "What can young people do to contribute to the development of democracy?" and "How can they exercise influence on many different levels?" In the clubs there will also be various board games, tabletennis and -football, and many different DIY activities. He will also see how food is prepared in Denmark and give examples of cooking from his home country. At Svendborg Outdoor School for Environmental Studies the volunteer will do biotope and environment research in woods, lakes, the sea and on uncultivated land together with children from the municipal schools. The collecting of animals, plants and physical data will lead to discussions on adaptation, conditions of life, food chains, man's influence on the environment, currents of energy, etc. Other activities such as kayaking, orienteering and mountain bike riding will take place on the water and in the woods surrounding Svendborg together with staff and young people from Svendborg Youth School. Through these a healthy lifestyle will be promoted. There will be the possibility of various trips and excursions together with staff and club members such as: Mountaineering in Norway, Christmas trip to Flensburg, non-alcohol parties, playing in a band, dance. The impact on the volunteer will be the development of intercultural communicative competences and experiences in setting up activities for young people which will help them exercise influence on the activities, but also on decisions concerning their choice of future studies and leisure time activities. The sports activities and research in nature will further the volunteer's reflections on a healthy lifestyle and sustainability. The impact on the participating organizations will be experiences in preparing volunteers, setting up learning plans together with the volunteer, handling youth passes over a long period of time, developing logistic skills by coordinating activities in four youth clubs and one outdoor school and communicating in a foreign languare orally and in writing. The impact on the target groups (the club members) will be enhancement of intercultural communicative competences and practical experiences with European citizenship while using methods of non-formal learning. The longer term benefits will be the fostering of social cohesion in the European Union and mobility during student/labour life. Other longer term benefits will be the creation of a healthy lifestyle while taking sustainability into consideration. Knowledge of the ERASMUS+ programme will ensure different kinds of mobility in the future.
