Learning in Action for a New Citizenships Education System

The Idea of “learn to experience democracy” promoted in 2005 in the European year ofCitizenship, is still an urgent issue now and especially within the framework of lifelonglearning. It can be used as a basis for the improvement of active citizenship and thepromotion of a democratic culture. Furthermore, looking at the European Year ofIntercultural Dialogue in 2008, we intend to integrate educational pathways targeted toactive citizenship and democracy with specific initiatives to strengthen interculturaldialogue and a common understanding among different European cultures. The project, promoting LLL as a fundamental right to active citizenship, intends toimprove the quality and quantity of lifelong learning supply through the development andtesting of new methodologies and learning and teaching tools based on participatoryapproaches. This will involve the main stakeholders and among them, the adultlearners directly involved from the needs analyses phases. The outcomes and impact:1. Local network agreements with public and private bodies acting in the field of theproject, a research report, community database, local coalition agreements, etc.2. Joint testing of learning opportunities for adult people, in different urban contexts(Rome, Berlin, Sofia) and a learning pathways handbook.3. Comparative analyses on each experience, such as: lifelong learning methodologies, learning contests, generated issues, participants’ profiles and their evaluations,teachers/trainers’ profiles and roles and evaluations, learning tools and a comparativeanalyses booklet. The evaluation of the project will adopt a social responsibility approach, followingparticipatory modalities, such as the European Awareness Scenario Workshop(transferable from the Austrian partner Institut FBI). There will also be support andpromotion committees, evaluation through stakeholders’ engagement processes anddiffusion and dissemination campaigns across the whole project.
