LEARNING AND TEACHING
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The European Union, through their policy “Teaching and Learning: Towards the Learning Society”, established the goal for every European citizen to learn three languages used in EU countries. In order to achieve this, one of the methods could be teaching the contents of different subjects in a foreign language. Our Region, Castilla-La Mancha, is increasing the number of Bilingual Elementary Schools. Therefore, in a few years the amount of students in bilingual programs in Secondary Education will also increase. As IES Aldebarán has a bilingual project in English in Secondary Education, and will have to grow in the near future, this is the context in which our project is based. Two teachers who fit one of the following criteria will be invited to take part in the project: - Teachers with a B1 level of English currently studying to obtain a B2 level and who have the intention of teaching their subject in English. - Teachers with a B2 level who want to start teaching their subject in English, but also would like to get specific training in CLIL methodology. The activities to be carried out throughout the duration of the Project will be: - Job shadowing experience with teachers in schools in the UK. - Attending training courses in the U.K. (See http://www.ipcexeter.co.uk/) - Teachers’ workshops to exchange materials and experiences. - Active participation in a blog developed for the project. The training courses will focus mainly on CLIL methodology, project based learning, cooperative management of the classroom and techniques for communication in a foreign language. Training will include both theoretical and practical aspects: emphasizing the social and psychological elements for learning a foreign language and developing cooperative work and learning to learn skills. The job shadowing experience will be carried out at the Chase High School in Malvern. Our school has had a student exchange with them for the last three years and they have agreed to let our teachers do classroom observations with peers of the same specialty there. The estimated results and impact will be related to the improvement in the level of English of the teachers, the acquisition and update of methodological strategies and the improvement of the teaching-learning process in our school. As a result, we expect to see an improvement in the academic achievement of our students. In the long term, we also hope to improve the interest level of our teaching staff for learning and improving their English, increase the use of innovative methodology and establish links and cooperative relationship with other teachers and schools within the European Union.
