This application was for three teachers from Saint Mary’s Primary School to take part in immersion courses to develop their language capabilities in line with the introduction of 1+2 Languages Approach in Scotland. The intention is to continue to embed the French language (L1) and culture within the classroom, across the whole school and at authority level. This will give staff a good foundation in which to learn additional languages and develop their confidence.
The immersion courses will provide staff with invaluable opportunities to converse with French speakers and to develop their ability to teach the French language. Furthermore, this experience will enhance their understanding of the French culture which they will be able to share with their school and the wider community. Staff will promote links between their school and Europe through the use of ICT. As a pilot school in the 1+2 Languages Approach, French is the school’s L1 and participation in the immersion course will impact on school planning, benefitting the children when they continue their education after primary school.
The staff are hopeful that this project will develop their understanding of the French language, increase their confidence when delivering it daily and to further the use of ICT in school through implementing E-twinning.
At Saint Mary’s we aim to increase attainment and achievement across the curriculum and we feel that experiencing this course will enhance learning and teaching opportunities for all and allow children to become passionate and enthusiastic towards their language learning.
