Language Training
Start date: Jul 1, 2015, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school has previously been involved in Comenius projects involving the pupils. We are currently in a project that will conclude this year entitled 'Knowing Me, Knowing You, Knowing Our Roots for the Future.' As part of that project, our pupils have been introduced to European languages. In March, French speaking Belgian pupils will visit our school and will participate in our school life for a week with our pupils. We have been developing many after - school programmes and wish to provide a more sustained language and culture experience for our pupils. We also see holding after school French Language and Culture classes for our pupils as a way to prepare them for post primary language education. The majority of our pupils learn French in 1st Year at second level. In order to hold French classes for our pupils, we need to increase the language competency in our staff. We propose to send three teachers on a week long LFEE Immersion Language Course in July. We believe by participating in an immersion programme during our own summer holidays, we will not only improve our French Language skills but will also be more able to inspire and encourage our pupils. The teachers will attend daily French classes and Cultural activities. On return, through providing a French Culture aspect to our after school club., our hope is that our pupils will be more engaged and more prepared for their language classes at post primary level. Our school plan is for 3 teachers to participate in the LFEE Immersion Course. This course will facilitate us in: 1. Improving our language competencies, 2. Experiencing the culture so we share share the experiences with our pupils. 3. Leaning about the best methodologies for learning a foreign language at primary level. By starting a French Language and Culture Club on our return, we will: 1. Engage the pupils and provide the opportunity for pupils to attend weekly French Classes. The classes will be fun with up to date methodologies that will encourage the pupils to learn the language. 2.Provide opportunities for parents and members of the community to visit the classes and learn about French culture and food. We will make these experiences as authentic as possible. 3. Dedicate a Notice Board to the club so that the whole school community can be involved and inspired by the club. Through the Immersion course, we hope to make connections with other teachers who will share lessons and experiences through eTwinning. We have experience of using eTwinning through our Comenius project and believe it is a good tool for sharing ideas and resources. We also hope to make partnerships with schools that our pupils can Skype and communicate in French.
