Language Training
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The LFEE Immersion course has been identified as an area for continuous professional development for the two specified members of staff at Duncanrig Secondary School. The course will enable the staff members to refresh and update their own linguistic skills and competence in Spanish as well as their abilities in the methodology of teaching and learning of a foreign language. These skills can then be shared with the rest of the Modern Languages department, at whole school level and with the associated Primary schools. As part of the school's wider and future strategy for development, it is hoped that the work currently being undertaken in conjunction with our primary colleagues will result in Spanish being taught as Language 3 in Primary 6 and 7 as per the Government's 1+2 strategy for language learning. As part of curriculum development, the department would like to offer Spanish alongside French to pupils in S1, allowing for seamless transition in the 2 languages between the primary and secondary sectors. It is therefore necessary that the two members of staff complete the immersion course as part of their training in Spanish, which will then result in an increased number of staff in the department who are qualified to teach Spanish. The department will also benefit greatly, as participation in this course will enable the staff members to help raise the profile of languages within the school, as well as helping to increase awareness of global citizenship through established relationships with European colleagues. In addition to benefiting the department and the school, there will also be increased advantages for the pupils. A higher number of trained staff will hopefully result in a wider variety of courses being on offer, and the pupils will benefit from the new ideas, resources and teaching methodology being applied in the classroom. Strengthening links with colleagues in Europe will allow for the building of partnership projects between schools, and will also be advantageous to pupils as they will experience language learning in a realistic context. A recent successful bid for iPads in the department will help to increase access to ICT and facilitate the planning and organization of these partner projects. Overall, participation in the immersion course will be hugely beneficial, not only for the participants, but for the department, whole school and wider learning community.
