Language Training
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The focus of the project is to aid the school in delivering the Scottish Government's expectation for two foreign languages to be taught in the Primary School. We plan to teach French to all children from Primary 1 onwards and to introduce a second modern language in the upper stages of the ESMS Junior School. We will be training one principal teacher who will have overall responsibility for teaching French to 700 children from Primary 1-5. Her background and understanding of the language and experience in Primary Teaching methodology makes her the ideal candidate to lead this new initiative. To ensure an interactive and engaging methodology, French will be introduced through team teaching with specialist teachers in Drama and Music as well as through every day activities within the classroom. The training provided by the funding will help this project to be delivered with greater confidence and a raised level awareness of current best practice in modern languages teaching. The globalisation of the labour market means that the young children in our care will be required to develop portable skills and to be more mobile in their employment when they leave school and/or further education. Improving the level of key competences and skills of our children will make them more attractive to an ever-widening labour market.
