Language Training
Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

This training will allow our staff members to learn a modern language and methods for delivering this to pupils in school. It will support our establishment in meeting the guidance provided for modern languages via Curriculum for Excellence. In particular, we will be able to work towards achieving successful implementation of the modern languages policy ' Language Learning in Scotland : A 1 + 2 Approach.' It will also be an excellent opportunity to form relationships with partners abroad and create professional dialogue with other teachers here in Scotland. The pupils will be able to communicate with other schools in the United Kingdom and abroad using modern technology, In August 2016 it will be possible for St. Mary's to continue implementing Spanish as a first language with more members of staff professionally trained to deliver this. Our school will be able to begin implementing French as a second modern language. Our modern languages co-ordinator will be well supported in her role by the participants of the immersion course, with a participant in each department of our school available as a valuable source of support to other staff and a useful point of reference in Spanish, this will enable our modern languages co-ordinator to focus more fully on implementing an effective programme for the learning of French. LFEE will support the candidates before, during and after the immersion course . The objectives of the project will be to improve the candidates personal linguistic skills and provide supportive materials and methodology techniques to deliver the teaching of modern languages to young children. This learning will then be shared with staff members within and outwith St. Mary's for maximum benefit. We have 3 participants from our school and their enthusiasm and hard working attitudes will ensure successful implementation of a modern language programme on their return. The activities during the training will teach important vocabulary and greetings. It will immerse the teachers in the Spanish culture and provide many opportunities for discussion and reflection on how the materials will support the specific needs of the school. The methodology to deliver this training will include trained modern languages teachers who are native to Spain or France. Resources provided will be supportive and will include links to modern technology. Games, songs and exciting activities will help demonstrate how best to teach modern languages to the pupils. This experience will hugely improve the candidates confidence, knowledge, skills and abilities in teaching modern languages to young people. It will also enable them to train and support other teaching staff. There will also be possibilities to share what has been learned with parents and involve local businesses to support and encourage a European dimension within the school. By 2020, the school will have fully implemented the 'Language Learning in Scotland: A 1 + 2 Approach' policy. All members of staff will be trained and pupils from primary 1-7 will have the opportunity to learn and become passionate about modern languages. St. Mary's will become more culturally aware and will be a leading school in demonstrating the importance of modern languages.
