Language Training
Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Baltydaniel N.S, Mallow, Co. Cork, is a Catholic co-educational primary school caring for 185 children and 11 teachers. It is a school which is continually at the forefront of new and exciting developments for primary schools. We have been involved with partnerships with schools from across Europe over recent years. We have welcomed exchange students from France and Spain and teachers from Malta to observe our methods of teaching and learning. Our school understands the importance of learning a European language at primary school and we continuously welcome opportunities and support to develop internationalism in our school. We are delighted to be currently undertaking the Erasmus+ programme for 2015/16. This mobility will support one of our school’s aims by fostering greater European identity amongst our school staff and pupils and our school community. We would like to provide our pupils with the necessary language skills to help them with language learning in secondary school and for their future careers. We would also like our pupils to understand more about how French historical figures/events and cultural events influence our everyday lives, this will help pupils to identify more with our European neighbours. We would like to promote a sense of shared European citizenship amongst everyone partaking in the project, pupils, teachers, local community etc. The teacher who has been selected to take part in this immersion course has studied in France previously through Erasmus, she was one of the first teachers involved in teaching languages (French and German) in primary schools as part of the MLPSI, and she is currently managing the Erasmus+ programme in the school. As this is a single mobility, the teacher will share knowledge and skills acquired with the rest of the staff on return. A plan detailing how language teaching will be provided, how members of staff will be involved, meetings with members of the local community who will be involved will be outlined. Language lessons will be provided on a monthly basis to a class by the teacher attending the immersion course, other teachers on the staff will integrate French history and art lessons into their planning and teach these lessons, projects will be undertaken which will be displayed in the local library, links will be maintained with the Paris primary school and a Showcase Day at the end of the project will allow pupils to display their work and demonstrate their learning to the wider community. Local press will attend and an invitation to our local Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs will be extended to present the Europass Mobility Certificates. All activities will be disseminated through our website www.baltydanielns.ie where there is a specific folder for French, through our social media and local press. These activities will have a very positive impact on the children in the school. We believe that the children will become more proficient language learners in the future, that learning a European language will lead to an enhanced awareness of and openness to other languages and cultures, and that there will be greater opportunities for them in international services and workplaces in the future.
