Language Learning
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our reason for taking part in this project was to improve the quality of learning and teaching that we deliver through modern languages. Spanish is new to our school and many of our staff members had no or little background knowledge of the language. We also hope to implement French as a second modern language in the near future. Therefore, it was necessary for us to seek professional development to firstly improve our knowledge of the Spanish/French language and culture. This was certainly achieved. All participants felt more fully equipped to teach modern languages on their return. Furthermore, we were able to support other staff members in delivering teaching of modern languages. Following this, we hoped to gain a better understanding of how to teach a modern language. In particular we focused on the skills of listening, talking, reading and writing as well as the cultural aspect. We now have a great understanding of how to teach these skills and have become better equipped with resources to support this. There is evidence from the children in our school that they enjoy learning Spanish. They have become more competent in their everyday use of Spanish and are provided with opportunities to practise their linguistic skills. The project has helped staff to improve their confidence levels. This is reflected in classroom practice where Spanish is being use more regularly. Parents have also commented on how much their children are benefitting from learning another language. We hope to continue to use a whole school immersion approach and are excited to see our pupils progressing each year.
