Language ind internship
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Reykjavík University (RU) has run the Department of Preliminary Studies for almost 50 years. It is designed for students with vocational training and/or sufficient practical experience who would like to start university. The success of the programme is indisputable and the students do normally well at university level. This group is indeed one of the most fragile groups on the Icelandic labour market after the crash. It is the group that has been especially hit by the crisis and thousands of them are unemployed. One of the things that employers require more and more is an international profile. Therefore, RU wants to create more international opportunities for these students where we combine internship and language learning. RU has agreed with Actilingua to provide these services in Austria. Our students would combine language studies with an internship. They would take German lessons for 4-6 hours per day where emphasis will be on communication skills. Lessons in grammar and conversations will help with syntax and vocabulary building. The students will practice formal and informal letter writing, and work on listening and reading comprehension. ActiLingua certificate confirms the students participation at the German course. This programme will be evaluated instead of German 2003 (3 credits) at RU. Every German course includes 5 lessons /week of cultural programme. There will be special talks, discussions and videos on Austrian music, art, literature, history and architecture. Films, tours of the many sights of Vienna, parties and sports all form part of the progamme. Students will be offered job placement in Vienna, Salzburg or tourist resorts in the Alps. The duration of the internships will be from 4 weeks up to 8 weeks. After the internship, each participant will get a detailed description and evaluation regarding the content and success of the traineeship form his/her employer. During the language course students will be accommodated in the ActiLingua Residence, with host families or apartments. This programme offered by Actilinga is supported by Leonardo Da Vinci and Erasmus of the European Union. By offering this to our students – RU is adapting to the changed situation of Iceland where students could normally count on a summer job. That is not the reality anymore and those students who will participate in the programme will have an educating summer programme where they acquire language abilities and working experience in a foreign country.
