Language Immersion Course
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The three participants have been leading language learning within their class and school for the past 2 years, attending twilight courses to develop a solid understanding of basic Spanish as well as the methodology of learning and teaching new languages, and helping to embed conversational Spanish into daily routine within their school. In addition to this, the three participants have engaged in supporting literature, and carried out professional dialogue with other council employees, including past participants of the immersion course, in order to ensure that their school is following the new national curriculum by embedding Spanish at whole school level. This has involved creating new planners and assessment tools for the learning and teaching of modern languages, as well as reviewing current policies and enhancing staff practice. The immersion course will consist of a mixture of language classes, in which the participants will investigate both the vocabulary but also the teaching methodology, opportunities for professional dialogue with professionals from around the globe, and even observations of practice and policy is Spanish Schools. In addition to this their will be opportunities for the participants to investigate the culture of Spain through excursions and local interactions. During the immersion course the participants will be building on their foundational knowledge of the Spanish language and further enhancing teaching methodologies as well as familiarising themselves with teaching practice and policy of modern languages in Spain. They will also be establishing links between their school and a school in Spain which will be used to bring new long-term learning opportunities to their pupils as well as increasing the pupils' intercultural awareness. When the participants return from Spain they will be using their new found knowledge and skill to contribute to enhanced learning opportunities within their class and to adapt existing planners, assessment tools and policy to achieve the optimum environment for learning a new language within a school and community. This will be supported by use of the links they have made with a Spanish school, and with other educational and international partners established during the immersion course. In particular pupils will be using these links to make their own personal links with other Spanish pupils and this will create long-term learning opportunities using a variety of communication tools, especially within ICT.
