Language Development and Britain Today
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

In today’s globalised world we would like to impart to our students competences like open-mindedness, curiosity, flexibility, tolerance, communicative skills and the willingness to learn and develop throughout their lives. Especially the Humanities and the Languages are subjects that can work in these fields. Therefore it is essential that our teachers are equally interested and willing to learn with respect to their subject, to methodology and didactics. Only then they can adapt their teaching to the needs of young people in a rapidly changing society, reflect upon their role as teachers and be authentic role models. In Modern Languages it is very important to us that our teachers are able to teach the respective languages in a competent and inspiring way, to sensitize the students to subtle differences in an intercultural context and encourage intercultural communication. Therefore it is necessary to immerse oneself in the language and culture every now and then in order to exchange ideas and broaden the own “language teaching horizon”. We would like to send some of our colleagues (especially those who teach modern languages) regularly to further training of teachers abroad. As we cannot send the whole department, the teachers who attend the respective training will pass on the material and content to their colleagues to ensure that everybody has access to new teaching ideas. European courses in foreign language teaching usually cover several aspects: new teaching ideas, materials and methodology are one focus, the perfection of the own language skill is another one. Furthermore these courses provide plenty of opportunity to learn from and immerse oneself in the respective society and culture by attending lectures and workshops or taking part in excursions. Frequently the possibility of visiting a school (“job shadowing”) is also given. Last but not least the exchange of ideas with other language teachers from all around Europe is very beneficial for all participants.
