Language Course
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

One of the main reasons for undertaking this project was that teaching modern languages is part of our school improvement plan and the embedding of the Scottish Governments policy of 1 +2 for language. Our school understands the importance of languages in order to develop childrens cognitive, social and emotional abilities. Reflecting on the educational needs of the school, it is essential that French is embedded within the curriculum and day to day routines in the classroom. French is currently taught to the children in weekly lessons. It is imperative that foreign languages should be at the centre of the children’s education, allowing them to develop as confident linguists and show an awareness of cultures out with their own. Enabling 3 class teachers to attend the immersion course allowed the school to move forward with training of a whole-school approach to teaching foreign languages rather than French being delivered by specialist teachers only. As the curriculum moves towards the 1 plus 2 policy, classroom teachers required the confidence to be able to teach other languages. Training staff through the immersion course allowed them to cascade their knowledge to all teaching staff and build up a bank of resources to support this. The staff have now been set weekly French challenges by those who attended the course and this has allowed both the dissemenation of resources gathered during the course and allowed staff to develop their competencies in the delivery of French. In the longer term the participants aim to use the updated Glow portal to allow resources to be shared throughout the West Lothian Authority. Linking with other schools in the authority will also allow further training and best practice visits to occur. Broadening the children's appreciation of life out with their own community is beginning to build tolerance and acceptance of other cultures. It is the school’s desired outcome to share resources with parents and eventually link with another school in France. The children in West Lothian should be allowed the opportunity to experience a global partnership and an awareness of other languages and cultures throughout their education. Our children deserve the opportunity to become truly internationalised. The objectives of the course were to develop and improve the learning and teaching of languages in and across all year groups in the school and to allow the participants to deliver and provide support where necessary to other members of staff. This was achieved through the following aspects having been covered during the course: • Improve methodological expertise in the teaching of French to young learners. • To provide materials and ideas suitable for the teaching of French at Primary level • To develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France, including the French Primary education system. • To improve competence and performance in French. • To use internet and ICT resources in class. Throughout the participants experience they developed their understanding of teaching French beyond their expectations through looking at grammar and other technical aspects to the acquisition of French. Due to the short time frame from the completion of the course to completing this report (1 month) we have seen vast developments in both staff and pupils understanding and use of the French language. Within the next academic year we intend to share our experiences and resources at cluster level and utilise the LFEE platform to continue further professional development. We also aim to involve parents throughout our journey. Next session we intend to adopt a whole school approach through offering opportunities such as a French Cafe and a school French club. The three participants were a male teacher who is currently working with primary 1 who has been teaching for 3 years predominately in the infant department (primaries 1-3) a female teacher who has been teaching for 7 years and predominately in the upper department (primaries 5-7) and a female teacher who has been teaching for 5 years and predominately in the middle department (primaries 3-5) and this year is a nurture teacher and working with children from across the whole school from primary 1 to 7. As a result we have seen an impact across all stages in the school and with more trained members of staff, others are building confidence within their teaching of French.
