LANGUAGE AS A MEANS OF SOCIAL INCLUSION

The LP involved 6 institutions operating in adult education and specifically in second/foreign language teaching. The main objective of the LP was to evaluate the best strategies to enhance social inclusion trhough the languages teaching activity: multilingualism is a strong mean to get social integration, to promote intercultural dialogue and social cohesion and its value appears particularly when the teaching activity is addressed to ethnic minorities, old people, women, all targets that need a special attention. The most diffuse methodologies of language teaching very often seem to be inadequate to this particular targets and can generate frustration and make every activity useless. The acquisition of a great awareness of those conditions and approaches, the observation of their effects on the performances of learning process actors can allow to make more creative such space (improving tools and methodologies), aiming to encourage adults to learn, to strength an effective language teaching and fostering a multilingual and inclusive environment. To reach these objectives the participants analysed as deep as possible the needs of learners and teachers and created two questionnaires: one for learners and one for teachers, in order to identify as far as possible their real needs and their cultural and social background. The LP made possible to have meetings in the countries involved, during which the participants had the chance to know directly the activities in the different countries, to see which teaching methodologies are chosen; they had also the chance to know better the adult education system of the different countries. The LP involved more deeply the local and regional political institutions, increasing their awareness of the relevance of multilingualism for social integration and their knoweledge of European LLP. This exchange of experiences helped to learn about the cultural diversity of societies in UE for a better understanding.
