1. Context of the project
The implementation of the so-called Tractament Integrat de Llengües (TIL) on the Balearic Islands, a program that prescribes the teaching of a number of content subjects in English, has revealed teacher training needs at IES S'Arenal, mainly connected with foreign language skills, the teaching of foreign languages and CLIL classes. This lack of training has limited coordination between departaments and interdisciplinary work in the past. Moreover, the need for a more active involvement in international education programs has also been noticed.
2. Number and participant profiles
We suggest 8 participants with the following profiles:
a. Teachers aiming to improve their skills in one of the foreign languages taught at our school (English or German).
b. Content teachers that have to teach their subjects in English aiming to take CLIL courses.
c. Foreign language teachers aiming to observe and learn from foreign education systems and teaching traditions.
3. Description of the activities
Three types of activities are proposed:
a. Training courses in foreign languages and culture.
b. CLIL training courses.
c. Training courses combining methodological contents and interaction in foreign language classrooms in German schools.
4. Methodology
The training plan was proposed to all teachers in our school. Then, a meeting was called for those who had shown interest. At the meeting the main themes of the training plan were decided based on the needs of the school and its teachers. A set of criteria was also established to the most suitatble candidates so as to maximize the impact of the training on our school (cf. section F).
The participants have coordinated during the design of this project by means of social networks and e-mail. These tools for communication will remain active until the training events are over and all the participants are back to school.
Also, a project coordinator has been appointed to follow up the development of the training events. When they finish, the participants will be required to submit a report to analyze whether the aims of the activities have been achieved as expected.
5. Anticipated results, impact and benefits in the long term
We aim to integrate the competences and experiences gained into the strategic development of our school through a plan of interdisciplinary work for the academic year 2014-15 and the years that follow. We anticipate that this action will have a both a short-term and long-term impact on the participants, the school and the area it is located in.
1. Impact on the participants
- Higher confidence and fluency when making use of a foreign language.
- Learning of new tools and techniques to teach both CLIL and foreign language classes.
- Establishing bonds with other European teachers and schools so as to pave the way for new projects of cooperation, in order to improve the quality of the teaching and learning process at our school and boost active teacher involvement.
2. Impact on the school
- Coordination among departments to attach more cohesion on our teaching and improve programs and activities that are currently organized at IES S'Arenal (e.g. the so-called Tractament Integrat de Llengües or the European Language Portfolio program).
- Reinforcement of bonds among school teachers to make them feel thet are contributing to a more consistent educational project.
- Better performance in content subjects taught in English and improved communicative competence in the foreign language on the part of the students.
- Reinforcement of the school's European dimension and process of internationalization.
3. Impact on the area the school is located in
- Improved professional expectations for students.
