Kurs i engelsk kultur, politikk, språk og litteratur for engelsklærere i videregående skole
Start date: Dec 31, 2015, End date: Dec 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The background of our project: A foreign-language teacher teaches both the foreign language and the culture of the country in which this language is spoken. He/She has to be knowledgeable and a resource, both when it comes to the foreign language and to every aspect which has to do with the foreign country. This is why a foreign-language teacher has to be in continous contact with the culture of the country where the foreign language is spoken. English is the most important foreign language in the Norwegian school, it is taught at the highest level of all foreign languages in Norway. Consequently, it stands to reason that the demands to teachers of English are especially high, both when it comes to language and cultural knowledge. As the working plan for language teachers does not comprise follow-up studies abroad at regular intervals, the consortium (Nord-Trøndelag fylkeskommune) through Network for English has taken the initiative to offer the possibility for such training. The objectives of our project: To provide teachers of English with knowledge which they will need in the practice of their profession. This will comprise cultural, social, political and historical knowledge as well as linguistic competence. Number and profile of participants: There will be 24 participants distributed over 2 years. All of these have competence in and experience from the teaching of English in upper secondary school, general studies and vocational training. Description of activities: There will be lectures on various themes within cultural, social, political and historical areas. In addition, there will be lectures on literature and language. All the themes will be related to the curricula of upper secondary school. There will also be discussions and conversations, and the participants will have the possibility to bring up issues of interest. In addition, there will be excursions to historical places (also related to the curricula of upper secondary school) with competent guiding. Methodology to be used in carrying out the project: The methodology will be one-way and two-way communication as well as the organisation of the possibility to experience England of old times and today, first hand. A description of the results and impact envisaged: The participants will acquire higher competence in English. They will be updated on British society in the fields of politics, culture, history, and social issues, and they will hopefully experience new ideas for approaching English literature. We are confident that this project will lead to a deeper understanding of British culture on the part of the teachers, and consequently on the part of the students in the consortium-member schools. When the students acquire more kowledge and understanding of a foreign culture, they will be more motivated to learn about this culture and its language. When one or two teachers at a school have attended a course like this, there will be extended effects. Our teachers cooperate a lot, and it is a premise that new knowledge and new experiences are shared with colleagues. Potential longer term benefits: Being taught by foreign-language teachers who are knowledgeable and in touch with the culture of the foreign language, will give students invaluable support in their intellectual progress. In the endeavour to create a peaceful world, knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is fundamental. The better people understand the cultures of other nations and master their national languages, the easier it will be for them to communicate and cooperate with these nations in a peaceful way.
