Kulturna šola - evropska šola
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school prides itself on a great variety of cultural activities, which is proved by the number of pupils included in these activities, the achievements made at the national level and the recently won title Cultural school. In the last few years, however, our school has been facing a marked deterioration in peer relationships, which is reflected in physical and verbal violence and a lack of tolerant communication. This can be ascribed to an increasing social and ethnic stratification in the school district. We want to find effective solutions and ensure pupils a safe and encouraging learning environment. We are conscious of today's challenge of how to extend the traditional teaching to the establishing of interpersonal relations and development of creativity. We deem cultural and artistic activities can play an important role in the process. The aim of the project is to explore the various possibilities of including cultural and artistic contents in education to encourage innovativeness and creativity in preparing teaching material as well as to raise awareness and improve the deteriorated relations our establishment has been facing. In order to achieve the goals, we will undertake two projects; a 2-year project Erasmus+Ka1, since the principle of art in class is relatively poorly developed in Slovenia, and a creation of teaching model called Theatre and film in class as a synthesis of the skills acquired in the project activities. It is meant to represent an example of good practice and encourage other educational establishments in introducing innovative, interactive, cross-curricular and student-focused teaching material.Beside creating actual teaching material our objective is for the teachers to gain a deeper insight into the possibilities offered by contemporary didactics in order to achieve better education results, to gain competences for autonomous preparation of such material, to adapt it to the needs of our school and – at the same time – to follow the principles of contemporary learning (communication model, cooperative and project work) and to develop self-confidence for further research. We would like the teachers to draw from the European experience, to strengthen their intercultural competences, which will introduce into our school and the local community the much needed openness to cultural diversity. We have started the project by forming a project group, consisting of the school’s principal, mentors of cultural contents, foreign language teachers, representatives of each school subject team and a psychologist. We consider representation of various profiles a must in order to ensure successful distribution of project activities at school and widely. The project will be led and coordinated by Katarina Klajn, who is also head of the project Cultural School, coordinator of the school's cultural contents and holds rich experience in theatre, foreign language teaching and international cooperation. She will take part in the mobility project, thus setting a positive example for her colleagues to participate in further international cooperation.During the project implementation, the project group is going to meet regularly in order to plan, carry out and evaluate the project activities: in the 1st year of the project period, we are going to determine 3 problematic education topics for pupils to reflect upon, theatre serving as the medium. On the basis of this, we are going to create teaching material to be used in class hours. In the 2nd year, the use of the material is going to be extended to foreign language lessons and in the end to other school subjects; this time short film is going to be used a means of expression. During the period mentioned, the coordinator is going to participate in 4 mobility projects, chosen according to the needs of the project. The plan foresees thorough preparation for each activity, mobility supervision on part of the school management and training providers during the activities as well as a detailed report and evaluation of the project once it has been finalized. The implementation itself of the project presupposes sharing of the newly acquired knowledge and competences within school subject teams and staff meetings and by means of online classroom. The teachers are going to introduce the activities into yearly work plans. The experience and novelties are going to be presented to the wider public, i.e. at parent-teacher conferences, municipal events, panels, experts meetings at home and abroad, in specialized magazines, on the school’s webpage and in the media. We expect that by introducing art in the curricula we will achieve the objectives set and become recognisable as a school that encourages innovative teaching practices and lifelong learning, strengthens national and European cultural awareness and development of the European identity of its teachers and pupils, which will be of great help to us in any further cooperation at the European level.
