Tokat Public Hospital Kindergarden got opened to education in 2013 and it is located at central district in Tokat City, Turkey. The school has 3 administrative offices, 4 classrooms, 1 kitchen and 1 dining hall. Our students eat 3 meals a day at school due to the fact that 90% of them participate in Children Club activities. Our kindergarden has 1 headmaster, 1 vice-principal, 1 officer, 5 regular permanent pre-school teachers, 3 Children Club teachers, 1 cook, 1 kitchen maid and 3 assistant staff. On a yearly basis, approximately 3 students receive inclusive education.
Operating in 5 different branches with 103 total students, we mainly provide classes of Drama, English Language, Chess and Gymnastics within the concept of Pre-school Education & Children Club. With 80% medical professionals, our parents are mostly of privileged socio-economic levels. Despite the fact that we are a newly opened school is in our disadvantage, it also brings about countless opportunities for improvement and we are always thirsty for growth.
As a global problem, obesity causes many physical and mental disorders and the studies state that the root cause of obesity is malnutrition and lack of progressional physical activities. According to 2015 statistics, there are 700 million obese and 2,5 billion overweight people all around the world and that is alone the biggest necessity indicator for taking urgent precautions on this front.
As accepted without reservations, awareness of a balanced diet along with proper physical training can be best acquired at schools and most effectively at kindergardens where individual habits / behaviours are shaped for the first time.
By providing a whole day educational curriculum (08:00 am – 5:00 pm) and serving our students 3 meals a day, our institution is quite determined to create a difference in fighting obesity and further avoiding it. Therefore our main goal is to promote the benefits of a healthy diet and essential physical activities and further repress obesity in lives of our students and parents, our staff and extend it in our region with well worked-out networking activities.
To accomplish our objectives:
1- Our voluntary team of 2 administrative officers and 3 pre-school teachers with Pre-school Education & Pedagogical Formation degrees will attend a 5 day ‘Healthy Teacher – Healthy School’ course in Helsinki / Finland and improve their proficiency of balanced nutrition and essential physical activities.
2- Our team will then return home to train and inform our local team and parents for solid collaboration in regards to fighting obesity. As part of the workflow, daily dishes at school will be controlled by our voluntary team and encourage our students to gain the habit of an healthy diet.
3- Physical Training classes at our Children Club will be revised in order to validate the curriculum for efficient physical training.
4- Conduct a survey of 5 questions to measure / compare our parents and teachers’ knowledge of obesity in the beginning of the project and at the end of it.
Measure the PMI (Physical Mass Index) of our students before & after the project to reach a comparison of their weight index and save acquired data in our resources.
5- All pre and after phases of the project will be shared with public and especially with pre-school institutions in Central Tokat and neighbour cities through educational seminars/sessions, Social Media platforms, press / online media and brochures.
6- Secure sustainability by making required amendments / assessments after the Project.
As a result of Project activities, our teachers and administrators will most definitely improve their efficiency on the subject, our students will be well informed about the obesity and its harm and they will be encouraged to gain the habit of a healthy diet and effective gymnastic activities at first hand, and willingly grow a self-defense mechanism towards the problem in their future.
Impressed by strength and impact of our project, parents, pre-school teachers in Tokat and the regional residents will become more self-aware on the subject and its causes, and eventually we will see a drastic fall in the number of obesity cases in the region.
We willl have the opportunity to debate the causes / solutions of obesity in an environment at EU standards, we will have the privilege to exchange views and powerful insights with people from different backgrounds, languages and cultures.
Being given the chance to attend the proposed course in Finland where the level of advanced education is long proved will most definitely benefit us in the long run to localise our insights in our home country and within our regional curriculum schedule, and it will be a tremendous advantage for our attendees, our teachers and our institution and certainly Turkey as a European Union candidate country.
