Kültürünü Tanı Dilini Öğren/Meet the Culture Learn the Language
Start date: Dec 31, 2015, End date: Dec 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our project was initiated because most of the adult learners from different professions wanted to attend our English language courses in ETU Life-long Learning Center.Besides helping the learners attain their language proficiency, by teaching European Culture and providing support in terms of language and culture to help them reach their academic goals, our institution aims to offer a program that will directly satisfy the requirements of the learners. As a result, our institution aims to be one step ahead of others. As an institution, our goal is to enhance our quality to meet the changing needs of our learners in Turkey.Requirements are met through the language-teaching program within the European Union Harmonization Period and finally create a language teaching program that will meet their requirements. Our academic staff, who will be applying to the program, is composed of 11 people who are graduates of either English Language Teaching and related departments, and have MA and/or PhD degrees from the aforementioned departments. We determined which staff would take part in the project by receiving email requests from those staff interested in attending, and by asking them to submit letters of intention. In the letters of intention, they thoroughly explained the purpose of participating in this project for teacher and student benefits. When evaluating the applications, the letters of intention were taken into consideration together with the duty index that we have created in order to ensure fairness and transparency. The key criteria in this index are the years of seniority in our institution, and whether the applicant has had experience of receiving teacher training in Europe. In accordance with the objectives of the project, we have determined that the courses must include cultural studies.By researching their contents and curricula, we have allocated the teacher training courses for language teaching. There are two foundations that we have designated.By contacting their authorized employees, we have introduced our project and demanded cooperation. “International House London”and “British Study Center” recognized our claim and informed us that they can assume the role of providing our employees with suitable training for our project, reporting, transferring information to our department, and pursuing our staff throughout this activity. We plan not only to disseminate our project-if implemented- via our website and radio channels but also to introduce it to the target group. With this mobility, we plan to organize the curriculum of the training program so that it provides an assessment and evaluation form for the course that combines the feedback we will receive from the participating institutions along with all the achievements of our staff throughout the project. Thus, we will be able to evaluate if this project has reached its required goals in a concrete way.For our project, we are planning to go to the United Kingdom because of its role as the homeland for English and thus for its appropriate role and practices of English in second foreign language education and the cradle for the development. We believe that the training which our staff will be given will help them gain a new perspective in terms of culture and language education and by conveying this new perspective to our trainees in class, we aim to upskill them not only in world view but also in the use of English in different situations and environments and help them to have acquaintance with European Culture before they go there. The related unit in our institution will keep track of the activities and development of the personnel before, during and after the project.Participants will be monitored by the institution during the project, participants will be traced and reported regularly by some means of communication which is agreed by both the participant and the hosting institution. The coordinator of the related unit is assigned to trace logistic and all other activities such as arranging visas, passports, travelling insurance and accommodations. The same unit member will provide guidance services to the participants. Moreover, all project members and participants will receive a seminar about cultural literacy before the project in order to raise awareness about cultural differences, and to inform about how to behave when there is such a difference. To what extent our project will affect the quality of education will be primarily evaluated with the determination of the degree of our attendants’ benefit from the intenintended training programs. For this reason, a final report will be required from the courses to be attended and the performance of our academic staff will be observed. The evaluation of the effect of this project on our attendants will be determined with the assessment of the training program. Therefore,a program evaluation evaluation survey will be conducted on the attendants attendants at the end of each course in our institution (see app:2)
