"Krieg-Verantwortung-Aussöhnung", Ansätze zum Verständnis des 1. Weltkrieges mit seinen Auswirkungen im 20. Jahrhundert und seinen Folgen bis heute.
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jul 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The idea for this project arises from the circumstances that the year 2014 has been proclaimed commemorative year of world war one, which started 100 year before. The year 2016 has specially been dedicated to the horrible battles between France and Germany on the battlefields of Verdun. Historically world war one is being considered as a trigger for the catastrophes of the 20th century. Different groups of European citizens are observing nowadays European politics with a lot of skepticism. The final trigger for this project was a citation of Jean Claude Juncker on 16th of November 2008 in Deutscher Bundestag „Wer an Europa zweifelt, sollte Soldatenfriedhöfe besuchen“ - freely translated - who doubts the European idea should visit the graveyards for soldiers. The participants should find out about the relation between world war one, world war two and nowadays conflicts in Europe. Thus the quality of the school lessons are meant to be improved. With the help of the impressions of the original scenes of war and a year later by visiting the places where todays pathbreaking politics in Europe are being made, the teachers were being enabled to give more invigorating lessons. The participating teachers were being enabled to stand up against populistic thoughts of students with the help of the hereby achieved authentic and well grounded knowledge. Allover 37 teachers from Staatliche Berufsschule Launigen and Staatliche Berufsschule Nördlingen have been participating in this program in two flows within two years. The major part of them are teaching religions, ethics and social studies, five participants are teaching exclusively in technical classes or in young workers classes. Among the first flows activities during the visit of the juvenile meeting place and educational center - Niederbronn les Bains were workshops on world war one and its consequences, a visit to the exhibition „singular fortunes during world war two“, insight into the archival work of this educational place as well as an attendance to the neighboring soldiers graveyard. On the subsequent days visitations and explorations of the battlefields around Verdun were organized and attended by Mr. Voigt, historical expert and chief of VDK Rhineland - Palatinate. This projects second flow was held in the subsequent year. The experiences during meanwhile given lessons on these topics have been discussed with the educational staff from Niederbronn les Bains education center. Dr. Klein guided us around the 1870/71 battlefields and in an adjacent workshop he discussed with us the different points of views on the wars and the convergences and divergences in memorizing the wars in Germany and France. The following three days were dedicated to getting to know three European Institutions in Strasbourg: European Court of Human Rights, European Parliament and Council of Europe. In the European Parliament we met up with Markus Ferber our regions member of European Parliament, who discussed his parties politics with us. The outcome of this internship abroad is an enormous increase of knowledge among the participants about world war one, territorial distribution and about ongoing conflicts in Europe. According to the curriculums of the singular subjects we are teaching, this internship will contribute to well funded lessons as well as more invigorating lessons with the help of the newly discovered sources of information. Furthermore the participants are publishing their knowledge in the civil society in conversations and discussions. Our French partner from Niederbronn les Bains has invited one of our German school classes to a workshop on the occasion of the German French commemoration in Verdun in May 2016. The participants have found out how important it is to have an open mindedness in terms of the European idea of tolerance and respect and the cohesion of the member states. They learned, that politics with exclusively national interests of the singular states can endanger peace in Europe. These comprehension will find its spreading among a big amount of people with the help of multiplication in lessons, exhibitions, further trainings of teachers etc. The civil sense for the European Union will be strengthened among political parties, institutions and our dual school systems partners from the companies.
