Kohti monikielistä ja kulttuurisesti suvaitsevaa koulua
Start date: Aug 11, 2014, End date: Aug 10, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The school is in many ways like a miniature society. School has its values and norms that regulate the activities and functions. The school also tries to form and strengthen certain values to the students. One of the primary tasks of the school is to get the children to learn healthy, good and tolerant values. The best learning result is achieved when the school and the various homes are aware of; and appreciate each other's habits, culture and values. In a multicultural society, it is even more important to keep the school teaching staff´s skill level updated. Saunakallio school has 250 students and is a primary school in Järvenpää, Jamppa. The school has many special needs pupils and the amount of pupils with an immigrant background is the biggest in Järvenpää area. At Saunakallio school there are also English-oriented classes. Already the first grade students learn the English language. English-oriented class aims to encourage students to become interested in the English language and cultures. The amount of immigrant students is increasing all the time. For a school, it is a great challenge and a great opportunity at the same time. The integration of immigrant children into the Finnish community requires huge efforts; tolerance education and the language teaching (Finnish as a second language and mothertongue learning) . Students with immigrant backgrounds bring with them new cultures . Pupils' experience of the world is extended and enriched by exploring new cultures. The project aims to explore the immigrant children's education and early language teaching in the Valencia region of Spain. In the region of Valencia as young as three year old children start to learn English, in addition they are taught subjects via Spanish and Valencian language . Most of the immigrant children´s home language is yet another language . How do you ensure that the child can keep the linguistic and cultural identity in a multicultural and linguistic environment? What kind of functional / non- functional practices are in use with young children studying a foreign language? How different children's home cultures are imported or made visible in education? What kind of practices are used to give a heterogeneous group of children a sense of belonging? What kind of values can be seen in the background of immigrant education? Before the study visit of the project we will begin our discussion topics in eTwinning network environment: early foreign language education, immigrant students' language learning andits role in the new home country, learning the dominant language versus home language maintenance. We wish to have conversation on practical experiences related to these topics . The project aims to increase teachers' know-how in multicultural encounters and in teaching languages. This information will be used in the development of teaching. Via discussions we want to share the experience of the community; but also have discussion in order to clarify our school´s values ( figuring out ways to encourage children to adopt good and constructive cultural values).
